I started this quilt in October.
I’m sure it was inspired by Bonnie Hunter’s String quilt book I had bought recently, but I remember I also had a bunch of 8 1/2″ muslin squares AND a ton of grey scraps. So I decided to play in EQ8 and this is what I came up with first
Then I flipped the colors in the four patch blocks
and changed the direction of the four patches
Once I was happy with that design I added borders, I added a 2″ inner border because with 8″ blocks, the math would work with 4″ squares on the second border, then lastly another 2″ border
I can’t find other pictures of the process, but here’s the top done, then I put it in a bin as I didn’t have enough grey to finish the borders, but the yellow and white squares were cut for the second border
Of course I used Accuquilt to cut out all the block pieces and trim the string blocks!
Finally I got some grey with a fabric order from connectingthreads and I added a yellow binding
I quilted it on my Juki machine (I know the picture is blurry) it’s a grid design that’s kind of reminds me of an old Greek design
I off-set every other row so it would have a half block design by the edges, but what I learned already, is to “optimize” the design AND go in reverse, it’s a few clicks in the program in QCT4, so the machine finished this quilt rather quickly! I just need to figure out if there’s a way to program it to do 3 rows at a time, so I don’t have to get up every 5 minutes to tell it to continue on the next row?!
For the back I used a grey too so it’s hard to see the quilting
of course the batting is Warm and Natural!
The quilt finished at 48″ x 60″
a fun scrappy quilt!
I listed it in my ETSY shop here
I love this! I have some Kaffe scraps along with 2 solid hand dyes that I’ve been playing around with for a veterans quilt. Do you mind if I use this layout?
Thats a fun quilt and I like how you kept changing it until you got it just right!
Beautiful quilt Bea! I also love making string blocks, they can be used for so many quilt projects.
What’s the current thought on using dryer sheets for the string block foundation? I’ve tried them and I like the way they work but I’ve heard negative opinions.
Beautiful finish on this! hugs, Julierose
thanks! it was fun
