Winter Blues Blog hop

Thanks to Carla for hosting this blog hop!

I LOVE BLUE! so of course I had to join this blog hop!!

I have lots of blue scraps, my dark blue bin is overflowing, so I looked at my quilt books and tried to find a scrappy but quick project

I found this red and white and sometimes blue book from McCall’s quilting

I found a cute blue and white quilt in the book but it was BIG! and of course I always think “Accuquilt” so since a block is based on a 3×3 grid, a large HST I thought that I could use the large HST die from the 12″ QUBE set and then the small HSTs from the 8″ set, those finish 2″ and the large HST finish 6″ so that fits together perfectly and since it’s a star block that consists of 16 of these blocks (4×4) one block would already be 24″ so I figured that was good and then add a large white border, it would make a cute baby boy quilt!

so I cut out lots of blue scraps and white solid triangles and made HSTs

And here’s the block sections done, fit perfectly with Accuquilt dies, also because the dog ears are cut off, there’s no trimming!

and then I added the large half square triangle

then sewed quarter block sections together

and with the big block together and a 4 1/2″ border it looks like this

Here’s the quilt all done! It measures 32×32″

I added a white and blue binding and quilting with QCT with an angled grid design that’s kind of large, which I think looks great on the quilt!

a fund binding fabric!

I’m giving away the rest of my white batik and a copy of my “Underwater stars” pattern. (I think there’s at least 2yds of it)

a Rafflecopter giveaway

  1. Such a beautiful quilt. I love blue fabrics, they’re in a way so fresh and clean. I will think of copying your quilt next time I’m making a baby quilt. Have a nice week with the blues. I fear my to-do list will be long after this week.

  2. Beautiful! Have only made one blue and white quilt so far. It is a snowflake wall hanging.

  3. Blue is my favorite color, so I’ve made quite a few quilts with blue but the closest to blue and white was my “giving quilt” which is blue, white and scrappy.

  4. This is lovely! The scrappy blues look great against that crisp white background. Perfect for winter! One of my favorite quilts I ever made was a blue and white Lone Star that was a wedding gift for my college roommate. It’s a great color combination!

Your quilt is beautiful! I actually just finished a blue and neutral quilt, out of leftover 2 1/2″ squares and then gave it to charity.

  6. I love this quilt. I’ve never made a quilt with just 2 colours but this is something I would really like to try.

  7. This is so pretty! Haven’t completed a B&W quilt yet. There’s an old UFO around sonewhere. But I have plans to do B&W for Xmas this year so I expect to have a lot of them by years end!

  8. Allison Evrard

I love your quilt! Blue quilts are perfect for winter time (here in Pennsylvania, anyway).

    1. thanks! we’re finally getting a bit of cold in NC, no snow for the kids though

  9. Hi Bea! Ooh-la-la, those stacks of HSTs are so darn fetching. They make me want to run right back and sew more blue and white HSTs myself. I am amazed at the number of people who have blue as their favorite color. Your project certainly highlights them in a gorgeous way. ~smile~ Roseanne

  10. Blue seems to come up in my scraps frequently, so I’ve made a lot of blue and white quilts. It’s a favorite color combination of mine. Your quilt is just beautiful, and I might have to try that out soon. Thank you for posting this one, and thank you for the giveaway to get me started, too. =)

  11. This turned out so beautiful, Bea! I love the HST’s in that combination and your quilting was perfect for it, too. Thanks for sharing!

  13. So peaceful! I’ve probably used blue in 90 percent of the quilts I’ve made, but not made just blue and white… …next!

  14. Such a pretty quilt. Thank you for the chance of a giveaway. I have more blue scraps than any other color, so I’ll get to sewing.

  15. Susan the Farm Quilter

I love your quilt!! I have never made a blue and white quilt! After seeing your quilt, I think I need to put a blue and white quilt on my list!

  16. Bea, your quilt is such a beauty in blues! The colors against the white is so crisp and perfect for winter. I have a great friend who loves blue and I know she’d love this too. I have not made a blue quilt, but you’ve got me thinking I need to!

  17. Love your quilt! Blue and whites are always so fresh looking. Thanks for sharing and for your giveaway!

And yes, I have made a blue and white quilt – a mexican star which needs to be remade….loved it but it is a little worn so I don’t love having it on the bed so much these days.

  19. What a great use of your blue scraps. Nice quilting. Thanks for sharing in the hop … 🙂 Pat

  21. Actually, I had been wanting to make a blue and white quilt for some time. ‘Got one finished for this Blog Hop, and two quilt tops ready to finish. Your quilt is very pretty. The quilting is so beautiful too.

  22. Bea that quilt is so sweet. What a great pattern to use up those scraps. Thank you for sharing and chasing away those winter blues with some fabric inspiration.

  23. Actually, I have a b/w quilt that is 85% finished. I was making it for someone, and they passed unexpectedly, so I put it away.

  24. Dixie McAdam

Love your blue & white quilt. Our oldest daughter is a blue fan so in making things for her I use blue & white. Personally I am a red fan however so there is a need to get into other colors! Thanks for sharing your project as well as your creativity to help us chase away the blues of January. It worked!

  25. Nice quilt, Bea! Great way to use up scraps! I love using my AccuQuilt cutter and dies! They really help move the process along!

  26. Rosalind Gutierrez

Blue is a fav here and I made a 9 Patch of blue & white that had eye appeal.

  27. I’ve never made a blue/white quilt, or any other 2 color, but I will some day! Yours is really nice.

  28. Love how you took the quilt pattern and made it your own. It turned out beautifully. You really do get the best out of the accu cutter.

  29. Maryellen McAuliffe

Really pretty, and great quilting. I”m glad to see you’re enjoying the computerized part of the machine. I’ve done a few blue and white, and have more to do and one almost finished.

  31. Your Winter Blues quilt is lovely. Blue colors are my all time favorites. Thank you sew very much for hopping.

  32. Your “block” quilt turned out so nice. Great quick way to make a baby quilt. Yours looks very nice. THanks for the giveaway opportunity.

  33. Neat quilt. Yes I made a blue and white quilt using a jelly roll a few years back. It is my snuggle quilt.

  34. Anja @ Anja Quilts

  40. Karen McMahon

I love your quilt! I have only made a blue and white doll sized quilt but now I am getting so much inspiration from this blog hop!

  41. I do love half square triangles and have been piecing a basket full for years. One of these days they will find their way into a project of some kind. This planned color quilt is gorgeous. Now I’m rethinking things! LOL!!
    LOVE THIS.

  42. The second large quilt I ever made was a blue and yellow log cabin style quilt. Love blue and yellow together.

  43. No I have never made just a blue and white quilt but I should, I have plenty of both.

  44. I made a blue and white table runner for my niece, and loved the clean, crisp look. I have an unfinished blue and white quilt in my UFO pile. I’m not satisfied with it yet–it feels incomplete and I’m not sure what it needs, so I’m holding on to it until I can figure out what it needs. Maybe some appliquĂ©, which I didn’t know how to do when I first made it, several years ago. I should probably pull it out again and give it another look. (Thanks for the reminder!)

  45. The binding on your quilt!….so gorgeous! I have made blue and white quilts. Some of those are my favorites! Thanks for sharing yours, it is quite reminiscent of a snowflake 🙂

  46. Sharon Aurora

I have never made a blue and white quilt but I would like to. And maybe even a blue and black one.
