remember my RWB block and the layout I made in EQ with the smooth sailing bundle here.

well I finished the blocks and have cutting directions for it as well, if you want to use this bundle to sew this quilt.

You have to refer back to the other page for sewing directions, but instead of doing all different colors, you will be able to cut out all the pieces from one FQ then mix up the pieces when you sew it together.

I used the smooth sailing bundle PLUS a solid red FQ to have 16 FQs

Here’s how to cut it- and do a TEST FQ because it’s a SQUEAKER!!

Lay out the FQ so the long side is facing you and the 18″ side is up and down.

Then cut out two strips 3 1/2″ wide (up and down) sub cut these into 6 1/2″ pieces twice on each strips so you have 4 and then one 3 1/2″ square each

Next cut out a 3 7/8″ strip, sub cut two 3 7/8″ squares and cut these two diaginally into triangles to have 4 triangles, the rest of the strip, trim down to 3 1/2″ and cut two 3 1/2″ squares

Now cut two strips again 3 1/2″ wide and sub cut these into four 3 1/2″ squares each.

Lastly cut the remainder into a 2″ strip and trim to 8 1/2″ twice.

So you have 4 pieces 3 1/2″ x 6 1/2″

12 pieces 3 1/2″ squares

4 triangles cut from 3 7/8″ squares

and 2 strips 2″ x 8 1/2″

here’s piles of all the pieces

I then took 8 of each of the (12) 3 1/2″ squares and drew the diagonal line on the back.

Then I sorted sets of 8 squares with lines and 6 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ just to make sure I have nice contrasts

then sewed together the sewing geese units

with the remaining 3 1/2″ squares I matched those up with the geese units and again tried to have contrast on most of them

then sewed the squares to the ends of two of the geese.

for the HST inside the block, if you look at the sample I made, one half was the corner block color and the other was the large triangle in the geese units, so I matched up pairs of those and sewed them together

I also made the four patch units as mentioned before and sewed the blocks together.

One color from the four patch was the same “geese” fabric and then a totally different fabric.

(you’ll see when you see the blocks together)

One trick I have for ironing these blocks at the intersection of the geese and the middle of the block, it was kind of bulky, so on the back side I ironed it slightly, then flipped up the side and ironed it flat, it helps!!

see! then I don’t get that “bend” in the middle if I had just flipped and ironed the block

Here’s all 16 blocks on my design wall.

One last note, some of the fabrics were directional and striped, when I drew the line on the back of the squares, I did them all the same, so when they are in the star block, one tip is sideways and another is up and down, but it’s the same no matter which way you turn the block.

I also alternated the corner squares to face up and down and then the other side was sideways.
