Whimsical and Wonky with Island Batik

Whimsical and Wonky

This month’s “theme” is whimsical and wonky, as you saw my post last week, I had a “plan” and it wasn’t whimsical or wonky enough with this table runner

So then I starting thinking about Accuquilt and of course they have several wonky/whimsical dies!

But I decided to use the wonky heart die

It’s a heart die that uses 10” squares!

I used 15!

So that made it perfect for this winter pack of 10” squares I had (I think I had used a bit from the pack)

I tried to alternate with light and dark when cutting.

One 10” square cuts everything out, the heart and the background all at once

so once I cut them, I took the fabrics from the heart pieces and put them at the bottom.

Quickly I sewed them together

It was at this point that I decided I needed something between the blocks

I was lucky that I had some white batik still and cut out 6 1/2” squares for the space in between the hearts that also were 6 1/2” Smile

As you can see I didn’t follow the placement exactly, if some blocks got shuffled around that was okay.

I machine did the binding, but for some reason it got a bit wavy! wonder what I did wrong?

I just quilted a quick meandering all over the quilt.

Then backing was this pencil fabric I’ve had for a long time, it was the perfect size

The quilt measures 30” x 36” a great baby/ donation quilt I think Smile

  1. The wonky hearts are so cute. I love them in batiks – but then I love everything in batiks. This will make a great baby quilt either for a friend or maybe donated to an infant care unit in a hospital.

I like the non wonky table runner and the wonky heat quilt. It's the first time I've seen the wonky heart die and I was confused because I wouldn't see a heart. How fast and easy is that die? I like quick stack, whack, and shuffle blocks.

  4. Great wonky hearts! I have some I did in the cool gray/green/blue colorway a long time ago; when I got back into quilting. It is one of my favorites. Maybe I'll post as a throwback thursday someday.
