Virtual Christmas Cookie Exchange

Hi and welcome to the last blog hop of the year hosted by Carol (and by Joan on alternate months!)

I just LOVE joining these fun blog hops! It’s a blast to put on your thinking cap months in advance and come up with something to fit a theme (or come up with something LAST MINUTE- which seems to be my case lately, what’s up with that? I’m always such a “planner” and hate being late or last-minute!)

This time I hadn’t planned a quilt either and as the day got closer and I kept getting those REMINDER emails, I figured I’d better come up with SOMETHING! and then I realized I had a small zippered pouch half way done, it just needed the zipper and lining and to be sewn together, so BOOM! DONE!!

It’s funny technique for this pouch, because the strips of fabric are sewn onto batting FIRST like a stitch and flip method, then the bottom pieced is also added in the same way, then you add the zipper and lining.

Then I started working on Christmas stuff for the Emporium

(it’s a little odd gift shop in town where they have lots of vintage, oddball new and old stuff, I sell stuff on commission VS renting shelf space)

Then I started on these Christmas Tree machine embroidered ornaments in 3 sizes and I added 2023 on the two bigger ones, I don’t know if I LOVE them, they are cute but I don’t like raw frayed edges.

The ME design is by Designs by JuJu

Then I saw someone else on IG post about these fabric fold stars and whenever I see them I KNOW they are missing the 3D element! because I used to make these out of paper strips and fold them into little 3D stars every Christmas, a very Scandinavian thing!

So I tried with 2 1/2″ fabric strips approx 20″ or so long and I was able to finish the star- it WAS tricky, but not that bad…..google a tutorial, the only link I had wasn’t working anymore, I just KNOW how to make these by heart

The white one above I folded and stitched a line down the seam but then I figured I’d try 1/2″ seam tape!

Then strips I made like bias tape-without being on the bias! but with a 2 1/2″ strip folded in half them the raw edged folded toward the middle fold and then folded in half with the original fold, so that’s maybe a bit over 1/2″ wide.

I tried to make one “flat” like I saw on IG, but I don’t like it, so I made another green 3 D one

Then I made 2 more in batiks AND a mini one out of curling ribbon!!

curling ribbon is 1/4″ wide and SO curly! that’s really the hardest part of it- controlling the curls, I tried to flatten the curls with the back of a pair of scissors, just like you do to MAKE it curl, but I did it on the reverse side. So finished it measures 1″

All these things plus two quilts for the emporium 🙂

Now for the RECIPE sharing for this hop!

I ALWAYS post this recipe.

It’s called a Danish Layer cake “Lagkage” and it’s traditionally served at Birthdays, which I DID for hubby’s and Anja’s birthday in November and I made another one for Thanksgiving.

Here’s a link to the recipe

It’s basically a box of yellow cake mix, a jar of raspberry preserves, vanilla pudding and then cherry wine (Plus whipping cream for the outside)

For Anja’s cake I used buttercream for the outside

and because it was for a party and we were 12 I wasn’t sure if one BOX was enough so I used 2 boxes, one vanilla and one strawberry!

I prefer the basic yellow cake mix and whipped cream on the outside!

  1. What fun holiday projects you’ve been working on. Love the folded stars! Merry Christmas.

  2. That is a super fun and festive cake! Thanks for sharing your projects. I do love DBJJ although, the raw edges on the tree hangers…. i’m with you. I would like them in a more crisp design. Idea! Maybe if done on a cardboard backer they would look more “country” or rustic …just a thought.

  3. Neat projects! I love those folded stars–I have only made a few and need to try more. I really like the way you made the folds on the top(?) stand out. I will have to try that. Thanks for sharing!

  4. What a fun purse and stars! I like the way you made them 3D. Much cuter than the flat ones. One of these days I’m going to have to make that yummy cake. It looks delicious! Thanks for sharing, Bea! xo

  5. Is it birthday time? Always time for birthdays, right. I’ve made those folded ornaments but not one with the 3-D effect; what a nice addition to my tuts.

  6. Beautiful ornaments. I like the frayed look on the trees. The embroidery really makes them special. Thanks for the recipe!

  7. Your bag is perfect and the ornaments are very clever. They look so time consuming but perhaps it’s cause I don’t do well with puzzles and those look like something I would need to solve. The cake recipe is so interesting. I love the jam idea in the middle and the different colors is so pleasing. The buttercream frosting looks like cool whip to me! I think having a tradition with a certain cake is so fun. My boys get whatever I feel like making…no specific tradition here!

  8. I’ve made the flat folded stars ornament before. I’ve never seen the 3D one that you made. Cute! And that tiny one…more than a challenge.

  9. What a great little zippered bag! The Christmas fabrics made it so festive. Your trees and folded stars are so cute! Your cake recipe sounds and looks delicious! Thanks for sharing.

  10. Those are amazing Christmas projects! Thanks so much for sharing with us! And the cake looks delicious 🙂 xx
