The “ugly” Irish chain quilt is finally done!
It doesn’t look too bad from a distance, but up close it’s UGLY!
I wrote about this before, how it’s all about the contrast! lesson learned.
On each block I quilted curves from corner to corner, it was pretty easy.
I made a scrappy binding from my binding remnant bin, and my luck was that almost every corner got a seam on it! SIGH- oh well…
And then for backing I had a huge piece of this UGLY green swirl, it’s just too bright and neon up close! –so a perfect fit for this quilt
Have you ever made your own spray starch?
I found a VODKA recipe and used lavender oil too and it works great! no more BEST press for me…..here’s the recipe I found.
-
8 oz (1 cup) filtered water
-
1 ounce (1 shot) vodka
-
5 or so drops of Lavender essential oil
-
Spray bottle with a mist setting
And I got a package from Connecting threads the other day!! washed and ready to be ironed!
And I finished another swoon block! (14 more to go)
Our garden is really producing now!
look at this huge cucumber!
lots of “regular” cucumbers
(I actually don’t care too much for the american cucumbers, I prefer the english style ones- those haven’t come up yet)
Lot of zucchinis too!
and Yellow squash
So far we’re only getting cherry tomatoes, but we have 3 plants of roma tomatoes and 3 of regular tomatoes and they are big and green!
we did get a few roma and one BIG tomato.
I like to make danish style pickles, there’s a ton of vinegar in there, a table spoon maybe of sugar and salt and pepper, they are SO sour that it hurts your ears when you eat them…. GOOD stuff!!
Sonja likes it

My little garden is not doing so well–too cold late into planting season, I think. Not sure I would like the vinegary pickles. The ugly quilt looks good in the photo. Well, we try and we learn.
Love your swoon block
That is not an ugly quilt!!!!
I've got to say that the colours of that quilt don't do it for me, someone must love them though. My Mum used to do that pickle thing with the cucumber but with sliced onions in it too, with vinegar and sugar, she only used to do it with fish which wasn't very often, lol.
It's not so ugly! 🙂 Your garden is very productive, and we love those cucumbers with the vinegar. I buy them all the time to make em! No gardening for me. To many weeds around here! LOL!
Nice harvest. and I love that swoon block.I'm gonna have try making my own spray starch. So it works better than best press? Yep gonna have try your recipeThanks for sharing
