Tutorial Tuesday–Stitching Mug rugs

beaquiltersEQ7tutorialtuesday

Christmas is near, so I was thinking of starting Teacher gifts, I asked my son and he has 7 teachers this year! wow…. mug rugs it will be Winking smile

and I was thinking of embroidering the middle part and designing it using EQ Stitch. So here we go!

To easily stitch out something you want to find an applique shape/block.

First one is SCIENCE,

I searched under science, beaker, rock, then “moon” and found a few

I like the bottom middle one- add to sketchbook!

I also added #8 the tree with the moon, just in case

image

Now social studies

found an american flag, not appliqued though.

image

Language arts- hmm maybe just writing something

Math could also write something

Gym, under 06 motifs there’s a sports section, lots of things to choose from

image

Art; under 05 the last section is called your design studio

I could use the scissors and the bolt of fabric- just pretend it’s a roll of paper right?

image

for music, I searched for NOTE and found these

image

Okay let’s get started on a mug rug

go to the sketchbook and find a block you like and click EDIT

go to the applique tab

hit CTRL A and CTRL C to copy everything

image

then click the WORK on stitching block

and under the artwork tab, hit CTRL V to paste it

Hit the center button on the top and maybe shrink it all a bit, that’s up to you.

image

Now go to the STITCH tab

it will look pretty plain like this, but we’ll fix it

image

first I want the saxophone to be yellow just so I can see the other stuff on it

image

play around with the different fill patterns first before coloring other parts, especially black, because you can’t see the stitching on the screen at all with black thread

image

You can also adjust the angle of the stitching, I did it on some of the music notes

image

Lastly color the notes black and the orange parts on the saxophone.

Add to sketchbook, if you are sure about the design you can EXPORT stitching too!

image

Here’s the art one I combined the two blocks

image

And the science one, I combined two blocks also

image

math- it’s  an equation- see it?

image

Language arts

image

And lastly social studies, I traced a block to make it applique then moved it over to the stitch block and made it smaller

image

Now go back to the quilt and made it 1 x 1 block with the block being 4”

Then under the border tab, unclick the size adjustments and just add a border to the right 3”

image

Now work on block and have the block also be 3 x 4” and only add snaps at 4 horizontally and 16 vertically, draw lines like these

image

Color the block randomly

and add to sketchbook

image

go to the photo tab and import one of your stitched blocks as a picture

image

On layer 2, click the SET photo button on the right

image

select your photo and hold down SHIFT and start at the top left corner and draw down to the bottom right corner of the block

image

You can add a 1/4” border to show binding if you want, otherwise the mug rug is done!

link up if you try this Smile

  1. How nice. Your tutorial came at the right time for me. I was wondering how to work on some mug rugs with embroidery. So, off to the block libraries to find what I need.

  2. What a neat mug rug Bea! I don't see the Click the WORK on stitching block in EQ7, am I missing something?
