I was working on a hexagon quilt this weekend and thought about the amazing fussy cut hexagon quilts I’ve seen online lately and thought I’d come up with a simple tutorial on how you can design your own!
First you need to create a one patch layout
Quilt-new quilt- one patch layout
Then I created mine to be 2”, just so you can see the fussy cutting easier
Then I looked at the recent fabric STASH download
and Art gallery- in blue has some fun fabrics, I like the bicycle one, so I imported all the fabrics in the line
Now picking one of the bicycle fabrics I created a hexagon flower (just the surroundings, not the center)
But they are all right side up. so let’s fix that!
on the right there’s the rotate fabric tool (if you don’t have it, just add it by clicking the dashed line at the bottom of the row)
once you click that, click advanced and type in 60
and the click on the upper right and bottom left hexagons
then change to 120 degrees and click the top left and bottom right hexagons
and lastly I click back to simple 90 degrees and rotate the bottom hexagon
Then click the fussy cut tool on the right column
and move the fabrics around
look how the fabric fabric looks just moved to a different spot
here I changed the hexagon size to 1” and moved the fabrics around
(again it’s the same fabric, just fussy cut)
So it’s fun to audition fabrics and see if they work well for fussy cutting and what size!?
Hope you’ll try it out!
That's a cool feature to play with! I knew we could do that, but haven't tried it. Thanks for the reminder.
What a wonderful tutorial
