Island Batik’s theme for March is Try a “new” technique
something NEW to me! so on FB we all brainstormed a while, as we’re all pretty seasoned quilters and have tried many different things, it took me a while to come up with something but I got a Nancy’s notion catalog in January and saw this Crazy quilting book with your embroidery machine!- something I haven’t tried before, I might have tried crumb quilting, but not crazy quilting with the fancy stitches on top and how fun to combine with machine embroidery!
When I got the book and CD I was super excited to try it and the theme for this month is a new technique, but for April it’s Vintage made new, so it could really go with either month, I decided to go with this month!
Now since I had a big bundle of Autumn’s Grace leftover from the blog hop in January where I only used the blues in the bundle, I felt like I should use more of them
The book comes with 3 block designs but 23 embroidery designs (where the stitching on top is different) and there’s different sizes for different hoop sizes. So at first I went LARGE- I had first thought I’d use this for April’s theme and there’s a size requirement for that of 36×36 or larger- though I know it’s just a suggestion, but still…
So according to the book you print these templates and cut out fabrics to match!
Then hoop stabilizer and start stitching out and attaching the pieces.
This was an 8” block
The pieces were plenty big and I cut loosely around the templates too.

Then comes the fun part! adding the decorative stitching and accent designs.
The CD comes with 12 accent designs and I used embrilliance to combine everything, but I could have done it on my embroidery machine screen, but it’s just easier to see on the computer!
After it was all done, I didn’t LIKE it…
It was cute, but the fancy stitches were just too BIG, it was like the block was just enlarged, not having the stitches fill in more, so I was disappointed.
Instead I tried the 5” (4 1/2” finished) and that was SO CUTE!!
so I made a bunch more!!
I made 12 in total
trimmed them and sewed them together.
As you may notice I used the accent designs ONCE each and tried to mix up the background blocks too.
Then I added a simple border.
Then it was time to quilt it, at first I had wanted to long arm it, but then I got a DUH moment, why not use my sewing machine and try some fancy stitches on that one too?? so I found some matching Aurifil threads and had some fun!
I used 3 different thread colors and a different stitch each time, even on the binding!
I just stitched “in the ditch” but with different fancy stitches
Here’s the finished quilt
It measures about 21” x 16”
so it ended up being sort of a mini quilt- table topper or maybe baby quilt?
My husband called it a “Vic-tik” Quilt
(Vintage Batik- quilt) ha ha, should copyright that phrase ha ha- just kidding
Of course Swiffer thought it was a quilt for him!

Since I got a new Island Batik box, I found some “older” batiks from last year’s box, here’s left over 5” strips- leftover from the circle qube quilt I made recently where I cut up 5” strips, these are unused strips and there’s one purple panel left too from a previous project.

I seem to spend my quilting time doing the usual sewing, you want to feel like you’re making progress in your project, and I know I rarely just devote sewing time to trying totally new things, like playing with all the stitches on my machine! I love the idea of forcing myself to spend time doing something NEW, even just trying out new stiches! Great idea.
It really does look like the vintage ones! Great call to quilt it with the decorative stitches too.

I have not tried crazy quilting, not sure if it's my thing or not. I do have an antique crazy quilt my MIL gave me years ago.
It looks great! I saw that another friend was doing something similar, and they really do turn out lovely. Glad you had fun! I haven't done crazy quilts, but also don't have the embroidery machine. That would make it a lot more fun.

The 'challenge' for one of the quilting groups I'm in is a crazy quilt (no other rules, thank goodness). I've been trying to figure out what I want to do. I have an old Janome that makes some fun stitches, but, I've only tried a couple of those stitches. I'm thinking of throwing in some of my vintage hankies and vintage linens in the quilt.

I have never done any crazy quilting but have been interested in all the beautiful stitching on the ones I have seen.
I made one crazy quilt back in the 70's. I liked using all the strange fabrics and bits of ribbon. No batiks then.

Hiya Bea!!! Nope, I haven't tried crazy quilting. I don't think I'd like it too much. I'm much too organized, I just don't care much for wonky quilting either. Your Vic-tik is so pretty! I like the bee on the one piece. I started doing a little monthly crazy piece quilt by hand, but haven't touched it in 2 years! This looks much more manageable. Thanks.
I made a jacket using a sweatshirt for the base and using different embroidery stitches. It was so much fun, I made one for my granddaughter.

I feel so blessed again in my marriage after Doctor ODUMODU brought back my husband that separated with me for one good year. Am ALENNA by name from ROMANIA. Even though i have mouths all over my body, it won't be enough to thank Doctor ODUMODU for his help upon my life. My husband separated with me for one year and have been in pains and agony without him. So, i searched for help everywhere but nothing worked out not until i meant Doctor ODUMODU. I explained my situation to him and he promised that my husband will get back to me within 48 hours as far that my heart still beats for him. I believed in him and he prepared a spell for me and my husband called me exactly when Doctor ODUMODU said. It looks like you had so much fun playing with all the stitches. I've also made tons of crumb blocks but no crazy quilts. I like that you used your machines stitches to quilt in the ditch also. Keeps everything working well together. I think it makes a wonderful kitty mat.
