Try it again with Island Batik New Jelly Roll quilt

The theme (as you saw yesterday in my post) for Island Batik this month, is “try something new”

and I was stumped,
a few months ago I did buy a pile of books from Martingale on sale, and I was looking at my Island Batik box of goodies and I had a 2 1/2″ strip pack called Icicles and 2 matching yardage

Then I looked at the new books and one was this strip quilt book so I figured I’d TRY IT!
It’s a BIG book! really thick and 60 patterns in there!

I marked a few as favorites then finally decided on this “Flower boxes” pattern but then I decided to make it smaller- it took a bit of math to figure out how many strips I needed and how much of a background color I needed, I decided on solid white, which was part of the neutrals in the Island Batik box.

I’m so used to using my GO cutter and QUBE sets, but this pattern used squares with marked diagonal lines which are then trimmed, but it didn’t take long 🙂

 I made 36 blocks in a 6×6 layout

then sewing them together, it now measures 48″ x 48″

and then I quilted it and added the dark tree print as binding

It’s hard to see the quilting but I quilted in white and used a feather and swirl design.

The batting is Hobbs SILK blend, it was a type I never worked with before, it was more stiff than I imagined when I opened it and higher loft, quilted out beautifully!

Since the quilt was bigger than a WOF, I added a strip of the light print winter yardage to the tree print and it worked out perfectly.

Here’s Sonja modeling on the quilt for me 🙂

The girls only have one half day left of school tomorrow, then it’s summer break!!

  1. Home Sewn By Us

Hi Bea! What a great finish and one that really highlights that beautiful IB fabrics. I really can't believe it is the same pattern from the book – your choices are so much more appealing, to me anyway. I would have just flipped right by that design based on the picture. ~smile~ Roseanne

  2. That is a very pretty quilt, both in design and color. And Sonja even matches the quilt! You got quite a deal with that book!

  3. I love all the blues together. That tree print on the back is absolutely gorgeous!!
