Table topper in batiks

I’ve been in a mood for making table toppers lately, so I came up with this

The block is called ducks in a row and at first I thought I’d make it a 1×4 layout, but then once I cut the pieces out I decided on a square layout instead!

 

I figured I’d try it  in batiks and found these winter batiks leftover from Island Batik

I had this 10” stack of batiks that were just a partial stack with a bit of matching yardage.

My plan was to cut 3 blocks again, but since I double folded the 10” squares they fit perfectly on the dies from the 6” QUBE set and it was SO easy to out 4 blocks, so I did

Here’s what the block will look like (x4)

with die #2 (small square) I cut out 16 white, 16 with trees (light blue) and 4 dark blue, it’s almost grey actually

with die #3 (large triangle) I cut out 16 of this diamond print, half turned 90 degrees (which is good with these batiks and on the fold it did it by double folding, but also if it didn’t since it’s batiks I could just flip it right and you can’t tell the back from the front much on these)

then die #5 (small triangle) I cut 16 white, 16 of a light dotted and 32 of dark blue/grey like the center square

Then I sewed together the corner HSTs and the middle small squares

And then added the corner dark grey triangles

and then I added the large triangles

then sewed the blocks together sort of like a nine patch

and I only had this snowflake yardage left but wanted a white or light inner border, so I cut (8) 1 1/4” strips from another white 10” square and sewed sets of two together and used these as the inner borders

and then added the outer border.

Now it’s ready to quilt, I have backing and batting ready and there was enough for the binding too!

I think this took a few hours from start to finish, not bad at all – well it’s not completely finished, but you know what I mean
