It’s my day for the country blog hop, and I’ll show how to do this fun and simple star block quilt!
It is actually a BOM for my quilt guild this year, and I loved the block so much that I wanted to make a quilt it it!
The block is called barn star (kind of fitting too right?)
I’ll just give directions for ONE block, I used 24 blocks in my quilt and used 8 fabrics from Island Batik!
From the colored fabrics cut
4 squares 2” x 2”
4 rectangles 2” x 3 1/2”
4 squares 1 1/4” x 1 1/4”
From white cut
12 squares 2” x 2”
On the back of the 1 1/4” squares, draw a diagonal line.
Place these in the corner of 4 white squares and sew on the line.
Trim seam allowance.
with remaining white squares, draw lines diagonally and using the 2” x 3 1/2” rectangles, sew these into flying geese units.
Here the seam allowances are being trimmed
Lay out the block as shown and sew the middle together first then the sides and that’s it!
EASY PEASY!
finished size is 6”
here’s my 8 different blocks (3 of each)
I then decided on this layout
I added a white inner border and a red outer border
Here’s the finished quilt
I quilted a pointy swirl all over it in orange thread (so rare I get to use orange)
then I used a yellow batik for the binding.
Now for the recipe!
This is for FRIKADELLER!
(Danish meatballs)
It’s usually a weekly dish in Denmark, with potatoes and brown gravy- not the thick American version BTW but a thinner almost Au Jus kind of sauce.
I can’t write the exact recipe as each family would make theirs differently and it’s such a forgiving recipe that you pretty much use what you have on hand!
Start with 2 x 1lbs of ground meats, it can be veal, pork, beef, turkey or even a meatloaf mix… just 2 lbs total.
Put in a kitchen aid or bowl to mix.
Then dice between 1/2 to 1 onion and put in bowl.
(you can also add garlic if you want)
some people even add shredded carrots- we never did.
add milk (or water)
and bread crumbs (or flour) I prefer the bread crumbs.
Also add 1 or 2 eggs
Then add salt and pepper and whatever seasonings you want. I often add Italian seasoning
(My parents had some stores in DK where one section of the store was tiny bags of herbs and spices, so our meatballs because VERY experimental for a while)
Mix together into a nice consistency, sort of like meatloaf but a little looser than that, add more milk or bread crumbs to get the right consistency.
You want to be able to take a bit and form into a ball without it falling apart.
Heat oil or butter in a pan and with a spoon, form small meatballs in your hand and place into pan, down overcrowd the pan, but fit a good amount.
Keep an eye on them and flip them or turn them a 1/2 turn when they get browned on one side.
You know when they are done when you press them and they don’t bounce back, but check one or two by cutting into them.
You will need to work these in batches, so have a plate on the side and either foil on top or another plate upside down to keep them warm.
When the whole batch is done,I like to put them all back into the pan for a bit to make sure they are all warm.

Great block Bea. That looks like a yummy recipe. I read through the recipe rather quickly, but the picture looks like they are smashed down while cooking so they aren't actually a round meatball, but rather flat on top and bottom; is that right?
