Stripe Blog hop

It’s time for another fun blog hop! This time it’s hosted by Carla at Creatin’ in the Sticks

When I signed up to do this I thought about something “stripey” and my scraps! and I realized I hadn’t done a string quilt in a while, so I played in EQ8 for a while and came up with some ideas. I knew I wanted a baby quilt and I had plenty of pink and turquoise scraps, then I planned on having a white stripe down diagonally on the block, so here’s a few ideas for that.

Of course I always think of what Accuquilt dies I could use, here I decided on 6″ finished blocks so I used shape #1 from the 12″ qube set which is a 6.5″ cut square, and I have kept a financial book that my husband got from work, I think about his 401K, not sure, but anyways, it’s nice paper, so I took it months ago when it came in the mail thinking I could use it as foundation papers, so I ripped out 20 pages and cut then with the die, easy peasy!

I also cut 20 white strips 1 1/2″ wide and pinned those to the papers and first cut the turquoise scraps into various strips.

Here I finished the turquoise side, didn’t put much of a dent in my scrap bin, oh well!!

Then I added the pink side

Then back on the die where I trimmed the blocks, I tried to line them up perfectly, but I wasn’t too worried about it.

then ripped out the papers and here’s 30 blocks!

After thinking about it, I didn’t use any of the EQ layouts but instead alternated the blocks like this

I also added a white 1 1/2″ inner border and a pink outer border, then I worried a bit about quilting it, as the top looked wavy, but…..

It quilted just fine! and I added a turquoise binding

The quilt is 32″ x 44″ so a nice baby size!

The quilt design is called “wild cherries” by Urban elementz and I quilted it in a pale pink thread

For the backing I had a bit of the pink border fabric leftover and then added another pink fabric

Here’s the rest of the blog hoppers 🙂

Thanks again to Carla for hosting it! Also stay tuned for my BLOG hop in March!

  1. What a lovely quilt . It will be loved and snuggled in. Quilty hugs are the best.

  2. What a sweet baby quilt! I love seeing an artist’s process of creation. The quilt looks great with so many different shades of the pink and turquoise. I see squares, Xs, stripes, triangles…a kaleidoscope of fun! The quilting is awesome.

The quilt is going to be good for tummy time. All the bright colors will have the baby’s attention and help her enjoy learning to reach her hands out and to scoot. Great project! Thank you for sharing.

Hooray another string quilt! I really really need to make one now. I have so so so so many scraps. Great tutorial. Thank you.

  5. Cute quilting for your pretty String quilt, Bea. LOVE those new (?) labels! Such a good idea to have a space for the date and the quilt size right on the label.

  6. This is such a cute quilt! I enjoyed reading your process for making it. I know what you mean about your quilt top being wavy – I have one now that I am hesitant to quilt it because of the center being “bubbly”. Oh, well, I’ll just do it and how it turns out, it turns out.

You can’t go wrong with any layout with these strip blocks. Made for a sweet baby quilt.

  8. What a pretty quilt!! I love the quilt design you chose also–I have been thinking of doing a strip block like this from my many scraps.

    1. string/strip blocks are fun and “free”. we all have so many random strips laying around that they are fun to use up!

  9. I love string quilts. I feel like I’ve accomplished some scrap busting as well as make a fun almost “Free” new project. I used to save all the junk mail to piece on, but we just don’t get that much any more. I am hoarding the phone books that I have left. LOL!!
Some baby is going to absolutely love this!

  10. I am going to have to give strip piecing a try. Love the colors you used, and love the variations you worked up on EQ. Thank you for sharing your tips.

  11. Such a beautiful stripe baby quilt. Thank you for sharing your process. It’s so fun to see a quilt grow and your quilting is wonderful. Thanks for joining the Show Your Stripes Blog Hop!

  12. What could be nicer than a strip quilt to make a stripey quilt. Loved that you used that book for the foundation. Great!
