Scrappy Red Tumbler Quilt

This quilt started quite a while ago, my red scrap bin was overflowing and then I had the idea to use the small tumbler die from Accuquilt

I “think” I had an idea of how many I’d cut and just kept going until I had a number that made sense, here the layout is 19 across and 13 rows so that’s 247!

a lot of my reds were really BOLD and funky, especially some batiks I had leftover from my days of working with Island Batik, so I figured that would add some interest to the quilt.

Trimming is often tricky and really I didn’t worry too much about lining up the rows too much or what fabric touched or didn’t touch another fabric, I just sewed away mindlessly, then trimmed and added a 1 1/2″ blue inner border and 3″ outer border- the red border was cut after I cut the binding, then whatever inches I had leftover I figured out how many WOF strips I needed and cut the border strips as big as I could which ended up being 3″ CUT!

The quilt ended up being 46″ x 46″ so rather square, I had hoped for a rectangle, but it doesn’t matter.

here’s a close up of the quilting and fabrics, the pattern is called Paisley Playtime by Urban Elementz.

and in true scrappy fashion, I also pieced the back from red scraps! (well any short yardage I had around- red yardage seem to disappear as soon as I get it!)

And my red scrap bin? it’s still full but not overflowing at least! 🙂

  1. I haven’t used my small tumbler die in ages. I need to do this with my scrap bin maybe alternate some hand dyes with black/white prints. It would be great for donation quilts.
