It’s time for Block 9 and 10!
at first I was going to separate them, but they are very similar, so why not cut them out and sew them together at the same time?
Block 9 I call a stingray, it sort of looks like one doesn’t it? especially in Blue!
Block #10 is almost the same but with background sides so now it looks like a dagger doesn’t it?
As you can see too, these are BLUE so they are both in a new row and you’ll be making 4 of each one!
You’ll need the companion Angles set for this too!
From the background fabric (white) cut out
8 of shape #5
16 of shape #8
and 4 + 4 reversed of shape #14 (if you fold the fabric twice when cutting you’ll get half of each)
From Color A (blue) cut out
8 of shape #5
and 8 of shape #15
From color B (a different blue) cut out
4 + 4 reversed of shape #14 just like above.
Here’s my 6” version cut out
for the “blue” I used a turquoise and for shape 14 I used a solid so I didn’t have to pay attention to right or wrong sides
Here’s my 8” version in scrappy blues and yellow background
For the 9” version I used this directional bunny as my “blue” and I cut 4 one way and 4 another way on die #15 then realized they should all have been pointing one way, oh well, it doesn’t really matter.
I also didn’t have enough of a FQ to cut out the background so I cut enough with two FQ scraps and I had some red left that I used for the #5 triangles (another sort of mistake I realized later, you’ll see at the end)
The 10” version I used just red and yellow and the black floral background fabric
with the 12” version I used blue scraps and white on white scraps, since the pieces are large I had to really search for big pieces, but I made it work
Then star sewing together the HSTs from the #5 triangles, you can’t mess those up, there’s only one way they go together
And then I started the stingray/daggers by sewing one side triangle #14 to the sides of the “blue” #15 kite shape
Then finish the stingray/dagger kite blocks
Then after that you sew the HSTs and rectangles to the kite blocks like this, iron the seams open as the “stingray” will get bulky right by the “tail” otherwise.
Do you see my mistake in the 9” bunny blocks? they are both daggers now, oh well, no one will know on this quilt!
and here’s the 12” blocks, the white is very scrappy but it’s white on white so you can’t really tell from the picture
Then sew them together into sets of two like this
and then into a long row with all 8 blocks
And then sew this row to the bottom of your quilt top so far
Here’s my 6” qube version
and 8” version
and 9” version, I then noticed the red was the scraps leftover from the row before- that’s what I get for making several blocks at a time and not doing them close together, it doesn’t look bad but I didn’t plan on it…
and my 10” version
and the rainbow 12” version, it’s probably my favorite so far!
Have fun!
Here’s pictures from the participants last week (sorry if I missed any)
Those two blocks together make a fun row. I may draft these blocks in EQ and see what I can come up with.
