Did you see the blog post I did for Accuquilt where I made this fun scrappy Patriotic log cabin star quilt with the log cabin die, and the 5” QUBE set.
First I had designed it in EQ8!
finishing at 55” x 55”
The quilt is supposed to be scrappy so I got out my scrap bins of beige/off white, red and dark blue prints. The 5” QUBE set and the log cabin die, the log cabin can make up to 12” blocks, but that doesn’t mean you HAVE to make the blocks 12”, you can just cut less logs and make the block smaller.
The yardages is approx.. 1 3/4yd beige, 1 3/4yd blue and 3/4yd red. Plus binding and backing and batting.
When I make log cabin quilts and especially scrap quilts, I cut extra pieces and those pieces go in a bin, so this time I got out the bin of “logs” and looked for beige/off white and blue logs.
Here’s all my pieces cut out
16 beige and 16 blue of each 1 ½” squares and all the log sizes up to 9 ½” then I cut 4 beige and 12 blue of the 10 ½” logs.
I thought at first that I would cut out blue scraps for the star blocks but then I thought it really needed a “constant” or a solid fabric in the quilt, and I had a nice chunk of blue yardage, you’ll need about 3/4yd of blue (out of that 1 3/4yds)
I cut out 36 of shape #1 and 288 of shape #5 in solid blue then 144 of shape #4 and 144 of shape #2 in the beige scraps. (My beige scraps where anywhere from beige, off white to solid white!)
(There’s 36 star blocks)
For the piano key border I cut out 160 of shape #8 and 4 of shape #1 in red scraps (the #1 squares I cut in the same red fabric scrap)
Here I started making the log cabin blocks and the star blocks and I also slowly started working on the red borders
Then when adding more I made sure the most recent piece added was at the bottom and I added the new log to the right side again.
Here’s all the log cabin blocks done, 4 that are all blue, 4 that are all beige and 8 that are half and half
I then laid out 4 piles of the blocks, with the half and half blocks top right and bottom left, which made me see that the last log added was toward the solid colored log cabin blocks, so the top right block had the last log added at the bottom and the bottom left block had the log added at the top so this way I turned the solid blocks so the beige blocks had the last log added to the right and the blue had it added to the left, maybe it’s too odd but I liked that it made “sense” at least in my head, lol
I sewed them into quadrants and then into the top.
The quilt top now measures 40 ½” x 40 ½”
Once the star blocks were added the top measured 50” x 50”
Meanwhile I had sewed a bunch of the red piano key borders together, each side has 40 red logs and there’s 36 blue star blocks, 8 on each side plus one for each corner. Then it measured 55 1/2″ x 55 1/2″
Here’s the quilt quilted and bound
I quilted a star meandering design all over it in beige thread
To keep with the “scrappy” quilt theme, I got out a bin I have with leftover binding strips and found all the red leftover strips and made a new binding long enough to go around the quilt, so at least 220”
I had my kids help me hold up the quilt in front of our house and in the afternoon the sun seemed to be JUST right for taking pictures.
Doesn’t it look great with our American flag??
Apart from the 3/4yd of blue, I did use yardage for the backing too but otherwise it was all scraps and yet my scrap bins are still overflowing! I think these fabric scraps multiple overnight!? It sure seems that way, I didn’t put a dent in them at all! Oh well, I guess I’ll have to come up with another scrap buster quilt 😉
I forgot to say Happy Veteran’s day this weekend!
That is a gorgeous quilt – scrappy and log cabins, two of my faves!
thanks me too! I actually just finished a scrappy log cabin top based off of one of my patterns, I’ll show once it’s quilted.
