Today, we’re ON THE ROAD home from a few days at the beach!
It’s the only vacation we’ll do this summer, as hubby still hasn’t found a job since he lost his IBM job, plus my in-laws are in bad health.
We go to my friend’s beach house (that she rents out) at least once a year and often in the winter time because there’s nobody at the beach and it’s just nice to walk around! but this time we get to go in the water!
anyways, on to the project for the block hop, when Carol announced the theme I was already working on some blocks with a travel theme called “Arkansas Travelers” made with a BOB die by Accuquilt.
I used them for this! Doesn’t look too great, does it?? that’s because it’s the BACK of a quilt!
I had started these Arkansas blocks back last January for a color of the month challenge and each month I just didn’t have enough grey scraps for the background so I put these blocks aside, then for the same challenge, I made some Hunter Star blocks, and Morning Star blocks.
I didn’t LOVE any of these blocks and had them in bins for months, then one day I realized they all finished at 12″ so then just HAD to go together into something!
Here’s the front of the quilt, it’s a Chimney Sweep quilt, also from the color of the month challenge and this is actually a pattern I wrote for Accuquilt years ago but here I did it super scrappy
Here’s the quilt from Accuquilt, it’s still on their website 🙂
I had actually made a different scrappy version for Solveig some years ago following this pattern too but kept the background one color (black)
So back to the new quilt, I used the color of the month then in canva figured out what the complimentary color was and used that as a background, then when I got 10 blocks I decided to use this pattern so I quickly made the alternate blocks out of scraps
notice the binding is even scrappy!
The top finished 50″ x 60″ so I first sewed the extra blocks together into a 3×4 layout then kept adding fabrics to the sides until the backing was big enough to long arm, I had hoped it would be straight, but it’s not quite, but that’s ok, it’s just totally scrappy and a “FREE” quilt that way
I’ll probably give the quilt to hospice next time I drive near there, I think it’s still fun to have something totally different on the back!
If you haven’t jumped around to other participants, here’s the list!
Have fun and thanks to Carol for hosting again!

Great quilt! And I love the scrappy binding!
Neat quilt! I think the “rejected” blocks look great on the back. Someone will be pleased to have this reversible quilt!
A beach get away sounds wonderful. You’re on the road quilt will be cherished by someone for sure
Your “Arkansas Traveler” blocks are very pretty and made an incredible backing for your scrappy quilt. Love it, Bea! Looks like a fun place to vacation…enjoy! Thanks for sharing, Bea!
Great quilt and use of blocks that you weren’t fond of.
Great quilts, and use of orphan blocks you weren’t fond of!
Oh, the travel block – not an easy block. It looks wonderful and Hospice will love to pass it on to someone who needs a hug.
Neat. Love that you backed it with all those ‘leftover’ blocks. Wonderful.
Such a fun scrappy quilt with so much detail. Way more points then I’m willing to work on. I so appreciate the work that you put into this piece. Hospice will put it to such warm use.
Thanks for sharing your scrappy happy quilt! Enjoy your vacation.
This is beautiful! The Arkansas Traveller block is wonderful. Love the orange border for the other quilt too.
