Ocean Blog Hop

I always love the challenge of a blog hop and got my thinking cap on for the “ocean” theme.

I really never have much tan/beige fabric around, I love BLUE especially in fabrics and often as soon as I buy it, as quickly I use it up.

I actually have two projects to show, because I finished my first one but then it wasn’t beachy enough for me, no blues at all, you’ll see, then I started #2 which was actually a top from August of 2020 that I never did anything with, then I got inspired and added something and it sort of fits the theme, though neither of them have a beachy theme to them, no seashells, no pail and shovel, but the COLORS work, so I’m satisfied it fits the “theme” 🙂

Here’s the beginning of project #1, I’ve had these tan and brown and white 5″ square packs for a few years and I’m NOT a neutral person so maybe that’s why I didn’t cut into them already, well the colors fit the theme, so at first I was thinking easy HSTs and with the Accuquilt qube set, I could cut out HSTs to finish 4″.

I had printed out 2 versions from EQ and quickly decided on the long version so a nice table runner!

As I was working on it, I decided to make the ends triangular too, I rarely do that, but the result was fun!

Long arm quilting this can be a bit tricky, but I stitch down the edges anyways, so I just had to watch out for the bias edges, it wasn’t a bit deal.

I used a quilt design called “heatwave” by urban elementz

It looks great on our dining room table! It is 16″ x 48″

Now onto project #2 this was based sort of off of a book, it had large background squares in light brown and then appliqued HUGE flowers all over it, but I think I stopped at this point because I didn’t want to do huge flower, nor did I have a huge flower applique die from Accuquilt, so the top went in a bin until now. Plus the top was small.

Then an idea struck! I had some turquoise solid fabric, I think less than 1/2 a yard, so not enough for much but I figured I could add a border around this quilt with the turquoise AND fit some applique, so I backed some of of it and cut out hearts with one of their heart dies and cut 2 sets of each heart.

Then fused those onto the top, sort of blowing up from the bottom left corner.

Then I added the turquoise border and it looked a lot better!

I quilted it in a tan and brown variegated thread and a design called “ginger hearts” by Urban elementz

The quilt ended up being 31″ x 36″ so a nice baby quilt I think 🙂

I used some leftover browns for the backing

  1. Great projects. I really like the design of the table runner – good choice on the triangular ends. And it’s always great when we can breathe new life into an old project.

  2. Both the table runner and quilt are very beachy and perfect for this hop. The runner looks gorgeous on your table! I love how you added the hearts to the quilt to make it look even more beautiful. Thanks for hopping with us, Bea!

  3. Both projects are terrific! The runner is so pretty and I agree, it looks great on your table. Bonus that you tried something new with the angled ends. Nice job. The browns and turquoise are a nice color mix. Adding the floating hearts is a nice solution. I love that they are a variety of heart shapes. That makes them look like they are actually floating and twisting upward in the wind. Perfect salt and sand colors.

    1. thanks, yeah I love long arm quilting, though it’s a bit silly to put a tiny table runner on a big frame, but it sure is easy 🙂

  4. Both are pretty projects, but I really like that zigzag table runner. Good to do something different now and then! I might have to emulate you for my next Table Scraps runner!

  5. These are great projects. The colors definitely fit the theme! Love the corners of the table runner and the quilting name, heat wave, also fits the theme for some hot summer beaches!

  6. Carol Kussart

Both are wonderful projects! You had a good idea to add the blue to the quilt. I particularly like the quilting in both of them.

  7. Both projects are so cute but I loved the lst one. Your quilting was perfect; so fitting for the beach.

  8. Hi, Bea! Darling Table runner and topper! Love the design and quilting on the table runner – and actually I agree, not one for much beige, but it really looks great on your table!

  9. Both pieces fit this hop color choice perfectly. Definetly they give off the sandy vibe.
