My happy place–My sewing room

My happy place is the GYM!! (no it’s not)- my trainer would like me to say that, but who am I kidding?? No one…

Of course it’s my sewing room!!

my sewing room row along

It’s always so much fun when Marian at “seams to be sew”

hosts the row alongs! This is my 4th year (I have two other rows hanging in my room, I just can’t remember the 4th row’s theme! hmm)

My Happy Place RAL 2018

My Sewing room row is available FREE here

My row is designed in EQ and there’s a fun spool block in EQ and also a sewing machine, though I modified it a bit to look like my Janome.

And I have to mention that before I really had a plan for my row, Marian already had fabric sponsors for us all and Northcott was very nice to send us fabrics for our rows, I didn’t have a “plan” yet. so I picked 4 FQs that I thought were pretty, but I didn’t get to use them at all!

I ended up doing solid blue for my background and the rest were solids too! but I’ll put these aside and make something pretty one day, so thanks Northcott!

So onto my row:

I printed the foundation papers for the sewing machine (love that in EQ8 now it prints in color!) though I did goof up on one place where I thought it was grey but it was black.

IMG_20180820_092846331

with a small stitch length I sewed the first steps together on the papers, I also cut and started the spool blocks!

IMG_20180820_093941478_HDR

I chose to use 2 reds for the larger spool blocks

IMG_20180820_095341211_HDR

it keeps growing

IMG_20180820_100348483_HDR

It’s starting to look like a sewing machine!

some parts of the directions are rotary cut too, so that makes it easy!

IMG_20180820_101924676

Here’s the two spools blocks all done

spool blocks

and the sewing machine

the spool blocks are stacked Smile

IMG_20180820_103322336

The middle part of the row has a 12 1/2” blue square with “My sewing room” and a pair of scissors and a needle,

I traced those out on heat n bond (or steam a seam lite)

IMG_20180827_181058152

then I trimmed and fused onto black and light grey fabrics

IMG_20180827_181335883_HDR

and cut them out, funny that it’s smaller than my big fabric scissors but bigger than my swan scissors Smile

IMG_20180827_181628372

Now I machine embroidered the “My sewing room” by the pattern also has the letters in reverse that you can trace and applique on.

IMG_20180827_181727708

I raw edge appliqued each one on with a straight stitch in black and then added some red embroidery floss and did a running stitch and had a knot and loose end up by the needle!

IMG_20180827_183108431

Here’s the row all sewn together! 12 1/2” x 30 1/2”

IMG_20180827_184306673

I did some simple quilting on it and added the same blue binding!

IMG_20180828_110235323IMG_20180828_110242494IMG_20180828_110246082

I like to design simple blocks, so that if you have the pattern and don’t want to do the row, you can take the individual blocks and make something with those instead!

Hope you try it and have fun!!

  1. That's my happy place too! Though my sewing 'room' is actually a sewing 'desk' in a corner of the living room! (It's fair division though – Husband's hobby desk is another corner of the living room. It's a tiny English bungalow with no space for a separate hobby room.) It's still such a happy place to be. 🙂

I love your row, and each of the individual blocks that make it up! Thanks for showing us how you constructed it too.

  3. Connie Kresin Campbell

Neat row Bea and love your sewing machine! Thanks for sharing!

  4. Linda Williamson

Great row. My sewing room is my happy go to place, but right now it's a disaster and needs a good straightening up. Thanks for sharing your tutorial. grinnie1961 at gmail dot com

  8. Your row made me smile. As soon as I saw it I thought 'that looks like a Janome'. Well done with the likeness

  9. What a great idea! I really like your plan for making things usable anywhere. I could just put that sewing machine on the front of a tote bag and be so in style! Thank you for your row.

  10. Great row pattern! My sewing room is my happy place also. It's the only place in my home that I am allowed to be messy. {oops…. I mean creative}

  11. Brenda @ Songbird Designs

Great row pattern, Bea! I'm happy in my sewing room and my Quilt Cave! LOL Thanks for sharing your pattern!

  12. The gym? Oh, you're so funny! Thanks for the biggest smile of my day. It was worth waiting a couple of days for. 🙂

  13. My sewing room is my happy place too! Thanks for taking the time to create and share…I really don't know how you get so much done with such a young family!! Very impressive!

  14. I like your sewing machine and row, and I like the fact you can use it as an individual block as well.

  15. I really like this row and of course i will make it. It is cute Thanks for sharing Elizabeth, Silverdale WA

  16. Seacoast Quilter

Very nice row pattern, thank you. Which of us doesn't love their sewing machine and the time spent at it.

  17. Sharon Aurora

I'm in my sewing room right now. Thank you for such a nice pattern.

  18. Thanks so much for being part of this QAL. I love all the sewing tools you've come up with for your block!! Thanks, too, for your little tutorial on how to change settings so you can see our email addresses. I'm not the brightest bulb in the package when it comes to computer stuff, so hopefully I can figure it all out. Just in case I can't, I'll leave my info. here, too. Thanks for all the hard work you've put into your block!! Vivian wvoaks at comcast dot net

  19. Thank you for this row. I think all of us consider our sewing room our happy place. Here, we can be ourselves.

  20. Oh my gosh! Loooove your row!! Thank you for sharing the pattern too… I haven't paper-pieced before, but this looks doable for me 🙂 I want to make this & hand by my machine! You did Awesome job!

  21. Definitely a happy place for me as well. Thank you for sharing your row pattern.

  22. Joyful Quilter

My sewing room is definitely my happy place. Thanks for sharing your very cute pattern.

  23. Carol Andrews

We have the same Happy Place! Love the block and can't wait to sit down and make it! Thank you for another great pattern.

  24. My sewing room is one of my happy places too. Thanks for the row pattern.

  25. Rosalind Gutierrez

Creative row and I like the modern sewing machine …the window for creating special features. rozz01atcoxdotnet

  26. I'm all for simple blocks and am grateful to the designers (you) that provide them!

  27. My apologies for commenting so late, I was at the doctor in the morning and came home with meds that just really made me crazy for the day. I truly slept the day away… Your machine really does look like a Janome machine, and the row is great Bea, love that you can take it apart to do blocks, that's an idea I had really never given much thought to. btw.. it been all 4 years that you've participated. 🙂

  28. Terri - Palm Bay, FL

Such a cute row and I love that you made the sewing machine look like one of the new computerized digital machines that are out on the market. A nice modern take from the traditional hand-crank, treadle or older model machines. Thinking of putting some kind of image in the screen section. Thank you for sharing your time, your talent and your creativity with all of us.

  29. Thank you for your row. My sewing room is a happy place for me unless it is disorganized. Then I have to work to get it ready to have fun again.

  30. Besides the beach, the next place I love being at is in my sewing room! This is a great "sign" to put up on my door!

  31. My sewing area is too disorganized right now to make me happy, lol. I had visitors, so had to pile everything into boxes and stack them high. It has been so long, it's going to be like Christmas opening the boxes!

  32. Great row! I think I might make this to hang on the door to my sewing room, though I would have to take it down when we have guests since the doubles as a guest room and I wouldn't want anyone to feel unwelcome!

  33. BarefootThunder

my sewing room is definitely one of my happy places. Your row is fantastic, thanks for being part of the row a long and sharing your great design with us.

  34. A great row. I see this as a wall hanging outside my sewing room door. Thanks for sharing.

  35. There's no happier place in this house than my sewing room, and I'm glad yours is a happy place too! Great idea to make individual blocks.
