Morning star FQ quilt

Have any of you tried the morning star die from Accuquilt?

So this is basically it in EQ, I then found out the yardage

Then added random colors and there’s an option to see FQs instead of yardage in EQ

I had an old FQ bundle from Connecting threads and figured I’d use it and split it up into light and dark

I don’t remember how many now, but I think it was 24- 12 light and 12 dark, it might have been less, I tried to just maximize the cutting on the die and figure it out as I went.

AHA! as I see this picture from June I see my little notebook and found it and I wrote down 8:1 ratio that I needed 40 dark and light triangles, then the triangles I needed 320 of light and dark

I was able to get 24 triangle and 8 corner triangles from each FQ so that equalled 18 FQs!

(good thing for notes!!)

I got a system going after a while, that after I folded the FQ and cut out all the triangles, the leftover piece I moved over to the side triangle spot then added a new FQ for the main triangles, this way I cut them all quickly!

Here’s all of them cut

sewing them together was fun, I tried to NOT do the same sets as much as possible.

then added more pieces

and soon I had 20 of these, so depending on if I used dark or light corner triangles, I just turned the block so the light would touch dark triangles or visa versa

10 of each!

and planned the layout on the design wall- notice I did the same corners for each block, so two blocks had the same corners since I cut out 8 of each color.

The blocks are 12″ finished so the top ended up 48″ x 60″

Then it sat in the closet for a while until I ordered fabric for the backing but then I didn’t think about binding either and waited for the right fabric to come along too.

I quilted a design in QCT5 called popcorn or popcorn flowers in light pink thread

and the binding is solid pink

I have it listed on Etsy here

  1. Wow I hadn’t thought about that die being used as a scrap quilt, but why not! I like that you used the same corners on a block though.

Lovely! I wish AccuQuilt would include the actual shape name, measurement . These shapes look like they would be in my cubes…I must get out shapes and try! Why buy the one big board when I have the shapes already! I’m short on storage room and would rather spend my money on shapes I don’t already own!

  3. I have this die, but have not yet tried it. But you have given me inspiration to try it out. The only thing that Accuquilt could do to help us quilters would be to give us yardage requirements for at least ONE block. Then, I could possibly figure out how much fabric I would need to make a quilt in the size I need.

    Thanks for your inspiration.
