It seemed like I sparked some curiosity and questions about “phone book” quilts in my last post…
It’s really just foundation blocks. By sewing the strips to paper it sets it better and prevents distortion because not every strip is straight, some are on the bias etc…
I “could” have sewn pieces together without the paper, but this is more secure
I got all my 48 blocks sewn together!
Then I got out different dies for HSTs from my QUBE sets and found that the 4” HST was the best fit!
Here the 6” one was too big
Here the 4” looks good!
I had to experiment with different ways of making this sort of signature shape for the strip sets (after I tore out the papers) that’s 4” wide
I tried folding in half and cutting at an angle, which was ok
I also had to figure out how long to cut it and found that 7” was perfect (from tip to tip) and I decided on a pale grey triangle and cut out 96 of them with the 4” HST die from the 8” QUBE set
I then started using my 12 1/2” square ruler from accuquilt and tried different methods of getting the 7”
then BINGO! it hit me, after trimming the signature blocks into 4” widths, I would also use the ruler to mark a line at the 2” mark- half way
Then I’d lay the big ruler on it and get one corner made close to the edge of the paper and then flip it and line up the 7×7 intersection and cut the other corner!
I got my little helper to help me (still getting over her cold) –child labor!! ha ha
she actually loves ripping out papers.
and VOILA! all ready for the corner triangles!
Should be fun to see the final quilt!
I can't wait to see it put together. My mom taught me to strip piece when I was in high school, but we used newspaper. Back then, we had the thick phone books, but it never dawned on us to use an old one. She would piece the tops and sell them to help buy my school clothes. I did one by myself and entered it in the 4-H show at school, and won 1st place. I was so excited!https://prayersformymom.blogspot.com/
Thanks for sharing. Phone books are getting to be hard to come by these days!Looking forward to seeing your finish.
How nice to have helpers. I rip out the papers while watching TV with the family. It's hard for me to just sit and watch TV anymore. Gotta have something in my hands.
