I started these blocks a long time ago, I looked at 2019 and only found this from December, so maybe I started it way before, my 2020 project list just says OLD, so who knows!?
Anyways it was an idea I had of using leftover binding strips, sewing them together so I’d get 8 1/2″ long strips, then I used the large hexagon die by Accuquilt
I cut out a bunch and then left in a bin until I had fabrics for setting triangles
I don’t have pictures of the triangles cut but here’s the layout I came up with, as you can see the hexagons vary a lot and I tried to go with the lightest first then darker and darker.
With the setting triangles you sew them to opposite corners first then add sides missing then sew the angles seams and then the rows
This was the top I ended up with
with uneven edges, it’s always nerve wrecking to trim, but I did it! – 1/4″ from the seams and straight up
with my last fabric order from connecting threads I finally got backing and binding fabric for this, the quilt is 51″ x 66″
The quilting is in grey and I used a grid design that was already in QCT, I forget the name
the back is a black and white print
a little bit of My Little pony snug in there, here you can also see the grey triangles are a grey print with triangles on it too, I thought that was perfect! (and I paid attention to which way the triangles turned in the quilt too! (when you cut them out, half will be up and half will be down anyways)
a fun and funky quilt to make and almost “free” as I used up lots of binding strips!
A really good idea! My binding box overflows. Thanks for the tip in how to assemble them too. It makes hexies look a little easier to work with.
Beautiful quilt, and great use of scraps!
Feel free to join the TGIFF link party today, and Patchwork & Quilts on Sunday!
What a brilliant idea! I love that you gradated the colors too!
Great idea! I have that die — and a bunch of donated strips.
that’s great! have fun
