It’s time for the last block for the rainbow Block of the month quilt along!
This was my original sketch for the 12 blocks
I laid out my 11 previous blocks wasn’t really sure if I wanted turquoise for the last block, this way I could see what color was “missing”
I decided on black!
So I got out my black scraps (and the white background) and with dies #2 and #5 from the 8″ QUBE I cut out the following pieces
#2 cut out 5 of Black “A” (2 1/2″ squares)
also cut out 12 of the white background
with die #5 cut out 8 of Black “B” and “C” (2 7/8″ squares cut in half)
Sew the HSTs together first (I forgot to take a picture)
Then sew 8 white squares together with the HSTs as shown.
Plus 4 sets of #2 white and black squares, because my “A” black was directional I sewed them together with the print being up 4 different directions- see below.
Then sew the HST and white squares together into 4 sections like this
and then finally the block like this with the last “A” black square in the center
Now for the sashing, each block is 10 1/2″ so that means I’d get 3 from a WOF and I needed 31 total plus cornerstones so that’s 11 WOF strips, I didn’t have that much of the white left! My original plan was 2″ (2 1/2″ cut) wide but I ended up only having enough to make the strips 1 1/2″ wide…. so I cut 31 –1 1/2″ x 10 1/2″ sections and then with a grey I but 20– 1 1/2″ squares.
Here’s part of the progress of adding them to the blocks, I like to add them to the blocks instead of doing rows and just adding the sashing to the sides of the blocks, this way, I can “fudge” pieces if I need to.
And I added a solid black 3″ cut border, so my quilt ended up a bit smaller than planned but still big enough for a lap quilt 40″ x 50″
I haven’t gotten around to quilting it yet, but finally got my long arm fixed so now I’m playing catch up!
I know this QAL was really long and I agree that once a month is too long!!
Don’t worry I already have another one planned one and it’ll be sort of a mystery, I’ll start it some time in the new year and then do weekly posts!
Plus I REALLY want to do a temperature quilt, have you seen one of those??
I did a temperature quilt for 2022, using the Accuquilt 4-inch Drunkard’s Path die and adding embroidered blocks for the year and to separate the months. I love how it turned out (needless to say, it took over a year!!!!!).
