jelly roll race quilt

Today was half a day at my kids school.

I was supposed to go shopping with our new neighbor, but we postponed it for tomorrow.

so this is what I did today 🙂

I really love the black squares in there.

I will say one thing….

I bought the jelly roll online it was MODA batiks.

then when I started sewing the strips were crooked and not accurate.

what a bummer! this roll also had large zig zag edges which was a pain to deal with.

But I managed to make it work, it worked with this type of quilt, but if I had to precut into squares, I would have recut everything in the roll. I didn’t realize this until first when I started sewing the black squares to the ends plus them the first step of sewing the looon strip together, starting with the two ends. when I started on row 2 I had two strips and two strips sewn together and was sewing those together, instead of lining where I sewed, I lined up the outside edges or rather watched BOTH.

Next time I buy a jelly roll it either has to be cut straight (which I’d prefer) or the tiny zig zag but I know that makes a lot of lint at the end.

here’s another update on my 2012 list

  1. Ooooh, I love the little black accent squares in this pattern – they're a nice pop of contrast!

  2. How neat! The black blocks really set off the batiks!Quilting by the River

Have taught and made many of these, although with the 45 degree angles. I love this one with the black blocks, what a great addition!

  5. LOVE IT… What a fun quick quilt..it's been added to my To Do list. I have the perfect person to look for fabrics for this idea! Thanks so much! Batiks are always a favorite of mine!!

What a really nice project! I love the little black squares that give it character!

  7. I'm not sure, but it looks as if your list has increased since last week. Girl how to you get sew much done? When I was pregnant, I slept all the time. Just reading your post makes me sleepy. Maybe I need more chocolate?

I've been wanting to do a jelly roll 1600 quilt for a while, with a Moda Swanky roll, and I love your idea of the blocks…I think I'll borrow it, and use different colors from the fabric – pink, blue, yellow, green. I have to say that I had the SAME complaint about those pinked edges. What a pain in the butt to sew!! I did a quilt using charm squares pinked that way, and hated it. It makes my eyes cross, to try to line up the points on them and try to keep my eyes focused where they need to be. But if yours was uneven I would write to Moda, and let them know. I think they might reimburse you or compensate you in some way…they seem like a pretty solid company, you know?

oh, one other thing – I saw your project note about taking paper off your red/green/yellow quilt. When I paper piece, I use regular printer paper. And before I sew, I set my machine to 1.6 stitches and sew over all the lines with no thread in the machine. When I finish my blocks, the paper just pulls away with no problem, and leaves nothing stuck in the stitches. I read all the time about people tweezing out paper and whatnot, but I've never had to do that. Have you ever tried it that way?
