Island batik challenge–Modern quilts

This month’s challenge is MODERN

and we’re allowed to use ANY fabrics in box #1 including these SURPRISE fabrics, it’s a gorgeous bundle and I’ve already cut into them as we had to make kennel quilts for Island Batik, so I had these leftover strips and really, really wanted to use them

Modern quilts often have a lot of white or background fabrics, I didn’t have that much white batik, less than 1yd and with chunks cut out of it, but then I had an idea to use my 2 1/2” strip cutter die by accuquilt and just CUT away and trim edges. Then make a jelly roll quilt and see what happens.

So I sewed all the strips together, the whites were different lengths but I think the colored fabrics were all the same, there was 17 of them and 18 whites.

Then in true fashion like a jelly roll quilt I sewed the long strip together again

and kept going

Then I got to this point and it was really long- should have maybe sewed it into 3rds this last time but I wasn’t paying attention and having vertical strips looks “different” too.

I decided to just whack at it and shorten the top, the width was 32 1/2” so I trimmed the length to around 40” or so, I just found a spot on each end that looked good to cut at, at around 40”

Then I added a border to it.

and to make it even more MODERN I quilted dense curves from side to side, not following 100% but letting it change “organically”…

The backing I used was a SQUEAKER so I actually goofed up on the last inch and bumped into my red snappers on the long arm, so instead of ripping out stitched I just trimmed the border down even more!

The top is about 37” x 44” I think

Batting was warm and natural Smile

Beautiful Bea and very creative to trim it down when the back wasn't long enough!

  2. You're so brave. And so fast. I just finished my May project yesterday. I'm always back, but of course I always get the fabrics three weeks after you. Have a nice weekend.

  3. What a fun quilt. I love the dripping color effect – or stalactite and stalagmite effect! Or maybe I just needed to use those words this morning! I think it is terrific!
