In the kitchen blog hop

It’s my day to show some kitchen stuff!!
For a while I’ve been looking at our potholders (which I made OF COURSE) and they are pathetic to look at! so dirty and worn and it doesn’t help that now that hubby got a new hot grill, we often make pizza on there and the pan gets super hot so it chars everything! (potholders included) LOL
So I had THAT in my head, to make a new set for us, plus this weekend in my mother-in-law’s 90th birthday and my mom’s birthday is at the end of April too, so why not make 3 sets of potholders!!
Over the years I’ve tried different sizes for potholders and I found that 8″ Finishes is a good size.
And potholders are great for using scraps or at least small amounts of yardage, I have a piled of “less than 1/2yd” and I picked my fabrics from that pile. Make 4 simple uneven nine patch blocks, I used my 8″ QUBE set, but it’s easy enough to cut out 4 1/2″ squares for the center, 2 1/2″ squares for the corners and 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles for the sides, plus I cut two extra for making hanging tags out of.
AND it’s a great use of small scraps of batting too! I used batting for 2 blocks and insulbright for 2.
I quilted them simply with straight lines, on the insulbright I got some slight folds, but these are potholders, so I don’t care!
Then I trimmed them all and added the hanging tags
And I ladder stitched them closed after sewing them together. I also made a set of bowl cozies for my mother-in-law with the Accuquilt die.
A quick and easy project!

  1. We always need new potholders. So I’m sure you all will enjoy those beautiful new ones. Have a nice day!

  2. Potholders and bowl cozies…a couple of the most loved and used kitchen items there are. Funny how happy a new potholder can make the cook. Especially the cooks that don’t like to cook (that be me!). And bowl cozies just make that bowl meal taste so much better.

Pretty potholders and bowl cozies! They will be much appreciated gifts!

  4. I have a drawer full of yucky potholders that need to be replaced. Great idea and really great gifts. Thanks for joining us in stitching in the Kitchen!

  5. Perfect kitchen goodies. Sounds like your hubby may need two layers of insulbright ;-} Pizza from the grill sounds yummy.

thank you for sharing your new pot holders and cozies. I love the bowl cozies. They are so helpful.

  8. Pot holders are always a great way to go. I like using old towels on the back of mine as well. The best potholders I ever had were from Weber grills. They used the thickest terry cloth I have ever seen.

  9. My potholders are in terrible shape so I really need to whip up some as sweet as yours. I’m sure they will be loved and appreciated by your loved ones. Thanks for sharing, Bea!

I never thought of using quilt blocks as bowl cozies. How clever! And a chance to make a unique gift, too. Style it for the person receiving it.

  11. Lovely pot holders, and something which is always needed around the kitchen. I am sure your MIL and mum will love them.
