Hidden forest quilt is hidden no more!

Have you seen this on my UFO list?? I started it in 2012! (I think)

HIDDEN FOREST QUILT PATTERN, BOM Applique From The Vintage Spool ...

Last December or January I was sorting my UFO projects and this project had been in a bin FOREVER and I really wanted to finish it, but I’m not into hand sewing these pieces down anymore and this was invisible thread too, which is so fiddly, I just don’t have time to sit for a long time, well I guess I do for sewing but not at night, I just don’t feel like it anymore.

As you can see I had changed the colors around a lot too and used this mottled print from connecting threads, I had 4 blocks made and all the black was cut out for the blocks but nothing else made.

I arranged them on the wall and played with different ideas

decided on adding a skinny border around the blocks

Then added black in between to make it square

and also a black border and then I was out of black! (This was in January)

Then I pulled out the rest of the fabrics from the bin and arranged them in order

I got out my GO dies and cut 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles and 4 1/2″ black squares and added that as a border. It now measured 42″ x 42″

For the back I had scraps leftover and a bit of yardage, enough for the binding but not much else, so I had the idea to cut out 8 1/2″ squares of sew them together in a 6×6 grid so the back would be 46″ x46″

I then put it in the pile to be quilted and I knew I wanted to custom quilted so I procrastinated until May!

For the blocks I did a dense filler design, then a ribbon on the block borders, a sort of water ribbon design on the black and then a loopy design on the outer border blocks

It looked fun from the back

BUT I had a ton of tension issues on the back, I couldn’t believe it! I loosened the belts and actually sometimes the belts would get in the way when I moved front to back but side to side it was fine, but the tension was messed up a lot of places, and I changed the bobbin more than once, so I don’t think I threaded it wrong… I don’t know what happened if it’s just on manual mode or what.

It’s not bad enough that I’d rip it out and do it over, I quilted it so densely too, and my plan was to keep it anyways and hang it up, so noone will see the back anymore

I pinned it on the wall in my studio in the corner behind my long arm, it fit perfectly

such a bright and happy quilt to look at (so I’ll just forget what the back looks like)

  1. That turned out really nice, congrats on getting an old UFO out on your wall. It looks beautiful on your gray wall and coordinates so nice with your thread rack!

  2. Wow, that looks great in your studio with the dark grey walls next to your colorful thread rack. Gorgeous finish. I really like the idea you did with the fabrics on the back. I’m running out of backing fabrics. This may be a great way for me to bust some stash in the process. Quilt on!

  3. So pretty! Those pieces sure do look fiddly, but the end result is so cute! Love the brightly colored border! It’s so great to finish longstanding UFOs.
