Geese and more

Yesterday I was looking at my 2013 progress list and looking at my shelf of completed tops and UFO boxes

I decided to get out these flying geese in a ring blocks, from a swap last year.

A swap that was beyond frustrating, but oh well… it’s over now.

I first got 5 blocks back- about 3 months LATE, then later on I got another one and another one

I remember one had a hole in it, so I tossed it.

I had planned some layouts for a 5 block quilt

Then I got the 6th block so back to the drawing board (EQ7)

And I came up with this

Then I unfolded my blocks and ironed them and realized this!!

One block is counter clockwise…. uh oh….

If it was 1 out of 5 I would have put it in the middle, but with 6 blocks… hmm

The papers were still on the block too- no big deal, but look, I can see the blue fabrics thru the white..

Sorry but I’m putting this block aside

(Why am I being so picky now???)

I might fix this block and make a pillow at a later time….

So back to EQ7 and looking at my fabrics

I still have this CRAZY daisy fabric that both had teal and blues, PERFECT!!

(I requested blue geese but some are blue and some are teal, but that’s okay- I like them)

There is ONE block that’s only BLUES vs teal and blue so that one goes in the middle

So I’m working on that today!!

Look at my board of completed tops

There’s 5 there but I already quilted ONE- I will show that later

So I have my 2013 list here on my blog and then my BOARD for when the tops are done

I have the quilt name or description

“B” means binding and I add a number for figuring out how many strips I need to make a binding, when it’s done and ready I change it to a CHECK mark instead

Then the measurement of the TOP

If batting is ready

Backing measurements

and if it’s READY to be quilted

I figured I’d show my “trusty” ol’ Brother Disney machine

we go back quite a few years 🙂

My first american sewing machine was a Kenmore but when I started quilting, we got this one so… maybe 8yrs old. I got it at walmart for maybe $300 but have since then had it fixed TWICE and paid $100 each time and it was all LINT!!

Then I got a cheapo Singer from costco, it’s my backup machine

and Now I have my Janome that I piece on, I then just embroidered on the Mickey machine and mostly just quilt labels, well NOT anymore with my NEW BIG brother!! 🙂

Sorry, Mickey, you’re being retired now or sold…

we’ve had FUN together old pal. You’ve helped me grow in my quilting addiction adventure.

But it’s time to move on….. (shedding a little tear)

On to something else, sniff sniff.

Another Ahhh got completed in the CAR Line at school.

I LOVE how the RB fabrics add this secondary triangle in the middle

I told you I completed the Benartex quilt, or rather quilted it, I’m ALMOST done with the binding.

Look what my NEW big brother made yesterday!

The hummingbird was in EQ, but I changed the body to be a “whole” piece behind the wing

The text is an ARCH feature on the PR620, and from the IHAN blog hop that’s going on now

I saw someone making a quilt label where she sewed two pieces together and cut an X in the back piece and turned inside out, LOVED that idea… so that’s what I did here, it looks much nicer than just ironing over the edges.

This was made in the 5×7 hoop btw

Now today as partly a leader and ender project- really the geese and this one are leaders and enders for each other. I started the next women of the bible block

Instead of cutting triangles for HST units I cut squares and first marked diagonally, then realized I needed to mark 1/4″ from the center on each side instead. DUH!

(I’m having a lot of DUH moments lately too!? hmmm)

So I figured I’d double check my 1/4″ seam allowances, well mine was about 0.3 OFF… so now it’s fixed and my block is perfectly 8 1/2″ – I’ll show that one later too

Have you checked your 1/4″ lately?

I know you want a baby pic!?

Look at this shirt… I want to embroider something like this?

“I am very cuddly & sweet from my head to my feet”

everybody say AWWWWW 🙂

  1. AWWWWW!! So cute. : )Wow, you are really organized with that board. Just my two cents worth on your swap block arrangement–I really like your options that include the blue sashings between blocks. I think they make the blocks stand out more, but that is just MHO.Shouldn't your old Disney machine go on a pedestal or in a shrine or something as a monument to your humble beginnings? : )

  2. Awwww. Those blue blocks are really gorgeous. How did one turn out backwards?Another idea for those labels is to sew a soft interfacing as the backing. Then cut the X in it and trim the interfacing leaving about 1/2" all around for the backing. If you use the fusible you can then iron the label on before stitching it down.

I love the second layout the best. These blocks look so difficult….I would have pulled all my hair out….giggle.

  4. Well … you could use the block and call the quilt, "One Flew South," or whichever direction. =)
