French braid Island Batik table runner

I posted about this in the IB FB group before October for the Oct “theme” of table runners, then someone posted that it’s supposed to have applique on it, OOPSIE! I actually made it before the winter toppers I showed already, so I put it aside and worked on a Christmas topper you’ll see soon.

I have it listed in my Etsy shop here

I quilted curves and swirls on it

It was actually inspired by another french braid quilt I made recently

DSCF8893

but as you can see I did the swirl in a different direction and from the middle part of the braid.

Here’s how the quilt started!

I had this 10″ square stack from probably the very first Island Batik ambassador box! (I had used pieces from it, so it wasn’t complete, so I paired up fabrics so I had 2 of each color- the pile on the right)

Then I used the chisel die from the 9″ QUBE companion set by Accuquilt and cut out 12 chisels of each color

and I used a white/off white print for the large middle squares and small braid squares and the setting triangles

first I laid out the fabrics like this

but I liked this way better

with the chisel shapes there’s NO trimming on the blocks, unlike patterns for french braids where it’s strips or rectangles and you square it up after it’s sewn together, here it’s easy peasy!

and soon enough I had 3 braids!

The runner ended up being 19″ x 45″
