As you know I’m an Island Batik ambassador and one of my fellow ambassadors Suzy Webster just published this cool quilt book- Folk ark quilted Traditions, she’s made 12 appliqued quilts blocks (+projects) based on Hungarian embroidery designs!
The designs are truly stunning!
I got the book and then had to pick a block and made “something” from it using Batiks from Island Batik.
I picked block #11 and I knew I wanted to make something “different”
At the same time that I got the book I just ordered a new sewing pattern called the MARGO bag by lazygirl design
and I knew I wanted to combine this block on the front of the bag and that it would look stunning in batiks!
I picked these fabrics from Island Batik’s “surf and sand” collection
Then I cut out the pieces for the bag AND the blocks (I decided to do front and back of the bag with the block.
Here’s the beginning of it.
I rotated the block 45 degrees and only did 3 edges (so a bit more than a 1/4 of a block)
I also decided to iron it all down and go from there.
I appliqued everything in the same thread color (a light green from connecting threads)
it’s always important to have the needle down when you pivot!
Here’s one side done!
I was supposed to use fusible batting, but I didn’t have that and I wanted the bag to be quilted so here I quilted the front and back and two other pieces (didn’t need all four done but oh well)
I did plain stippling/ meandering on the light fabric and the echo quilting on the front and back pieces
Then I trimmed them
and the “scary” part of making this was cutting the pocket area away! but it worked out perfectly!
I got so busy sewing the bag together that I didn’t take any more pictures until it was done.
I love it! The straps are the perfect length and 1” wide and there’s pockets inside as well
Of course, because I had it on the floor, Anja quickly crawled over to grab it
On the bottom, the two center circles meet and I think that looks okay, I knew it would happen and who looks at the bottom of a bag anyways?!
