Floral whole quilt quilt along block 1

Ready to start this star block??

From Red small floral AND blue small floral: Cut (8) 5 1/4″ squares

From Red small floral cut (16) 4 1/2″ squares

From Yellow: cut (4) 4 1/2″ squares

Last time I placed an order with Connecting threads online I saw this “quick quarter” ruler

You don’t HAVE to have it though, but it’s fun to use- just another GADGET! right 🙂

Using the ruler, on the back of all the blue floral squares, draw sew lines, by lining up the ruler corner to corner and drawing down the two edges

OR

if you don’t have this ruler, just draw diagonally with a regular ruler and SEW 1/4″ on each side following the following directions.

see the lines?

Now lay the blue on top of a red square, right sides together

sew on the lines on both sides

Now press to set the seams before cutting

Here’s a great video from McCall’s

split the pile into 8 and 8

on 8 of them mark diagonally again with the 1/4″ ruler or a regular ruler.

lay on top of other 8 blocks, with opposite colors touching and right sides together

I still do these blocks by feeding “the dogs”

I’d sew down on side, pivot the block to start on the other side, start a little bit THEN cut off the previous block and put it aside.

Iron blocks and cut off dog ears

Lay out the block pieces (4 in each pile)

I start at the bottom right and sew two together and move upward on the layout

iron toward solid fabrics (red and yellow)

and continue sewing blocks together

Then you’ll have 4 like this!

I’m doing a linky party already below, you’ll have until NEXT weekend, it closes monday morning the 11th BECAUSE…….

Riley Blake is doing a GREAT giveaway

3 different prizes!!

#3 goes to a non-participant- just comment on THIS post and say you’ve VOTED!! I’ll also have mr. random pick one on monday the 11th

link up ANYTHING that goes with the quilt along, if you don’t get to anything BUT pick your fabrics, then take a picture of those and link up 🙂

  1. Miss Bea, I'm so sad that I don't have the fabric I need to start this. I'll be about a week late if not longer, but I DO intend to do it.

  2. This would be my first time to do this… I hope I won't have any troubles linking. Can I use any fabric?

  3. Your tutorial is very well done. You got me thinking about doing this block in some fabrics I bought the other day, but I think I will use some scraps! Hope I can get the linky thing correctly done–that is new to me.

  4. oops, posted on wrong post. I have one of those "quick" quarter rulers, but have never used it. I was just watching an episode of Quilt In A Day last night and Elinor Burns showed how she sewed the same block without it. Sew many ways to do things. I learn more each day.

  5. So each of these blocks should measure 12-1/2" unfinished, right? Thanks for doing this!

  6. I voted for my favorite of the ones posted. I think my email address is where it should be. I'll double check. Great giveaway!

  7. I think I goofed last night. I voted for my favorite which is number 4. I don't think my vote showed last night.

  8. My favorite is number 3. Love anything with red and yellow! They are happy colors, the white really makes the block jump!

  9. Lindsay(PACountryCrafts)

I voted! I really, really want that ruler, now! 🙂

  10. Hiya Bea!!! I love the block! I voted for number 2, love those color combos. Thanks for having the giveaway. Blessed be, hugs!!!pamspretties57 at gmail dot com

  11. I love the fabrics you are using! Looks like a fun QAL! I am getting ready for a quilting trip to Lancaster, PA. But once I return, inspired and loaded down with fabrics-I will try to start this!

  12. Looks like fun! Thank you for the great tutorial and the giveaway. jbechosend at sbcglobal dot net
