Floral Quilt Along block #4

It’s FRIDAY!!

Time for another block in the quilt along

For some reason I thought today would be Good Friday so I planned on making the easy block, should have looked at the calendar! Oh well.

So you’ll have Easter to work on the appliqued Center block….

We’re working on this block – Shoo fly

It will be 4″ when done (4 1/2″)

We’ll use the yellow and small red floral fabrics

but FIRST cut out (1) 16 1/2″ square from the yellow and put aside for next week, just to make sure we have enough fabric to work with 🙂

We need 4 blocks

From yellow cut (24) 1 7/8″ squares

From Red cut (20) 1 7/8″ squares

On the back of (16) yellow squares, mark a diagonal line with a pencil OR erasable marker

Lay right sides together on top of the red floral square

Sew ON the line on all 16 and trim off 1/4″ seam allowance 

 Iron toward the red.

As you know, I like to lay out my block pieces next to my machine before I sew them together, this way I can catch any mistakes

And DUH! up until this point I had only cut pieces for ONE block, not 4…

So I cut the rest and sewed them.

Iron toward the YELLOW solid squares

when I sew HST blocks I lay out how I need to sew it together,

But if there’s a solid underneath, I like to flip it over and use that piece as my sewing guide as I know THAT one is straight

I also (almost always) use something as a leader and ender

 When finishing the blocks, Iron toward the middle as that is the least resistance way 🙂

Here’s the 4 blocks done!

Next week we’ll do the appliqued CENTER block

Then the last week we’ll cut the borders and assemble the quilt top!
