I guess I’m on a kick about using scraps and making baby quilts!
I wasn’t sure if I wanted to turn this into a pattern or not, after it’s done I think I’ll just show it and not turn it into a pattern.
The whole thing started because I had 4 orange FQs and didn’t know what to do with them, then I was looking in EQ and found a fantrick file I had played with before, I modified it to fit a QUBE set and thought about the 9″ qube set, it’s my least used qube set out of all of them, so why not show it some love and use it. I figured out I could cut cut 6 halves of the fantrick block from each FQ!
I like to print the quilt and have a margin of 2″ all the way around for note taking, I figured with a 2″ and 4″ border it would be 37″ x 46″ so less than a WOF for the backing 😉
From each FQ I cut 12 of shape #14 (the triangle in a square sides- so really it’s a triangle in a rectangle)
and 12 of shape #2
then from white 48 of shape #14 and 48 of shape #2
I quickly got the top put together and I had another odd orange FQ that I could have used as an inner border if I pieced it together, but one of the orange FQs had a bit or turquoise so I found a scrap of yardage and cut out the inner border, then I had a white orange print for the outer border.
And here it is all quilted and bound! I had a scrap of orange batik which I used for the binding!
I quilted a design by Urban elementz called Denise’s dragonflies in a very pale turquoise Signature thread.
For the back I had a teal and orange plaid fabric, not enough of either to do much with and I really don’t like plaid, so I used it for the backing!
here’s a close up of the back
a quick and easy baby quilt to make and of course you can use the 8″ qube too and FQs 🙂
Looks beautiful Bea, what a great way to use your orange fabrics! I’m not crazy about plaid fabrics either and using them on the back is perfect!
Very nice, Bea! I like that block and, though I’m not a fan of orange, it’s grown on me lately. I like the tiny check fabric on the back!
Great tutorial. I have random FQs hanging around, I might just mix them up and use my 9″qube. I think this would be a great charity quilt.
