Exploring the Starry Path BOB Die by AccuQuilt: Quilt Ideas, Tips & Fabric Requirements

Have you ever tried the starry path BOB die by Accuquilt?

a BOB die is a “block on board” meaning you cut out all the pieces for a block on the board in one pass.

With this block, the angles and shapes are so odd, I think the only way I would have tried it otherwise would have been foundation paper piecing, but the block finishes 9″ so that’s pretty big and a die is GREAT for that!

This was my basic idea from EQ8, alternating starry path blocks and star blocks made with the 6″ QUBE (Shapes #1, 3 and 4)

Just in different colors 🙂

I used a white background, two yellows and two turquoise fabrics.

EQ says 1/4yd of the 4 colors and 1yd of the white but I cut 1/2yd each of the colors and 1 1/2yd of the white, just to be safe, usually Accuquilt dies don’t have a lot of waste but with a funky die like this, there IS some but EQ is usually good about counting on that too in case you used templates.

With white I cut 32 of shapes A and C from the starry path, 32 of shape #1 and #3 from the 6″ QUBE

With each color I cut 8 of shapes B and D from the starry path, 8 of shapes #3 and #4 from the 6″ QUBE

there was lots of fiddling with scraps to reduce waste, but that’s okay with dies 🙂

I quickly sewed together the starry path sections

and before long I had 8 of each of the blocks made

Here’s the top put together, at this point I realized I wanted a border and added the dotted turquoise, so that put the quilt at 42″ x 42″ (3″ finished borders)

So it took a while before I got around to quilting it

For the back I used a solid turquoise and used the same turquoise dotted fabric for the binding.

Here’s the original quilt I made following the sketch and no borders, but a cute striped binding, it measures 36″ x 36″

Here’s some other ideas I came up with for this die using EQ!

Here it’s similar but the alternate blocks are Arkansas Snowflakes, it would be a 36″ x 36″ quilt also

Here it’s just the blocks with sashing and a sort of piano key border, this would finish 45″ x 45″ and use about 3/4yd of each of the 3 colors (probably cut 1yd of each)

Similar to my quilt without borders, finishes 36″ x 36″

a more modern quilt where I really utilized the background, this finishes 27″ x 27″
