Are you ever inspired by quilts in a book and want to change it or copy it or change the block size/ colors/ number of blocks etc?
I am OFTEN! and this is where EQ is SEW handy!!
The other day I was flipping thru a scrappy quilt book, just because I wanted a new scrap project, something mindless but also to use certain colors as I have my scraps sorted in shoe box plastic bins and my grey was way overflowing!
I had this book marked and then thought I could do a more planned version with grey
So EQ to the rescue!
The block was easy to find, as there’s a section called diamond in a square in the EQ Block library
The block is called twelve triangles
I had decided to make the blocks 6″ then I could use my 6″ Accuquilt QUBE set! here’s a layout with 9×11 blocks, I like uneven rows so if I alternate colors it looks nicer.
I then started coloring and needed another color with the grey and that was red-as my red scrap bin was really full too!
Then I went in with the paintbrush and held down ALT and colored the outer triangles blue on the 2nd block and by holding down ALT it already colors every other block like that too!
I swapped around some colors and if you want scrappy reds/greys or whatever, I try to color the sections different shades of that color in EQ, so if I change my mind and want to replace a color and click the “swap color” it will only change the outer triangles or the middle triangles etc.
I didn’t like this one
I decided on this layout.
Once I started cutting I realized that I should probably add a solid color, something uniform to tie the blocks together, so I decided on black yardage and then the math from EQ and once I started cutting didn’t match at all, was it EQ’s fault??
NO!!!
I realized I had used my 8″ QUBE set to cut out all the pieces instead of the 6″ so now my quilt will be 72″ x 88″ instead of 54″ x 66″
Oh well…. well good news is that my grey scrap bin got greatly reduced! and the black solid was really only 1yd extra, so the rest of the fabrics were “free” scraps.
I love using EQ for edits and changes like this!
