EQ7 Tutorial Tuesday–Quilt frames

beaquiltersEQ7tutorialtuesday

Do you ever make or find a kind of complicated block you want to use in a quilt but it needs MORE but adding sashing around the blocks is not really what you want?! How about some sort of frame?

Here I have a simple fish from the EQ library

image

in a layout with other blocks it looks fine by kind of BIG

image

I wanted more of a “frame” around the fish and then also use a lighthouse block

image

I found an uneven nine patch

image

then when working on the block (page)

I did BLock/ serendipity, merge blocks

image

then I found my nine patch block as the background and the fish on the right

image

If you click on the fish it will turn it

image

as you can see I also had the same nine patch block modified to be a frame

image

With the same black frame then colored blue like the water and put into a quilt with the lighthouse, I made this quilt.

But did you notice under the serendipity options, there is a FRAME option!?

lots of neat frames in there

easy!

  1. At first glance, I understand why you think the fish is too big and needs more space around it.But what caught my eye is the 'waves' that the fish creates. Look at your first design with the big fish and pinwheels and let your eyes relax, they may cross a little. The fishes' tail makes vertical curves, like they're creating a wake, like a boat does with the water behind it. The pinwheels look like bits of seaweed. To me, the movement created by the fish is a more important design element than the size of the fish. But if it really bothers you, maybe reduce the height of the fish a bit, but leave the tails the size they are. This would make a cute quilt as a gift for a baby boy.
