EQ7 Tutorial Tuesday–OWL FPP block

beaquiltersEQ7tutorialtuesday

Thanks for a suggestion of doing a FPP block in EQ7.

It’s really something I haven’t done much with, so I had to learn this by trial and error this time around and here’s the result that I’ll share with you.

How to make a cute owl FPP block with applique Smile

I tried to do it all FPP but the eyes and beak would create a bunch of FPP sections that would be tricky to sew together.

image

Go here and download this picture of the owl pin cushion I made last week for the pin cushion blog hop

owl pic

In EQ7 start a new file and create a new block

BLOCK/New block/ Easy draw + patchdraw

image

under tracing tab, import the picture, crop it so the top is close to the ears and the bottom close to the owl too and even the sides too.

image

click inside the block to fit

image

it centers the pic and fits the top and bottom

image

now is the fun part! click the easy draw tab

my block is 6” x 6”

and 48 x 48 for both grid and snaps

draw lines vertically 1” from each side

image

Now let’s form the ears.

My lines were from 2” down to 1 1/2” on the side and 4” and down to the

1 1/2” line

image

Now draw a line sideways at the 1” line going OVER the line for the ears at the SNAP points

image

Click on the COLOR tab and back again on the EasyDraw tab and the excess of the line disappears.

image

Finish the ears, starting at the top point of the each and drawing a line to a snap point below the horizontal line that formed the head.

Then click back to the COLOR tab and back again

image

Now draw lines at the bottom 1/2” in on each side

It should look like this.

image

Now go to the applique tab

Pick the OVAL button

image

And draw a larger circle for the outer eye, holding down SHIFT to be a perfect circle, copy and paste another eye like that and move them into position. (CTRL+C and CTRL+V)

Repeat for the pupils

image

Now pick the polygon tool and draw a triangle for the beak.

I started by clicking low and dragging upward so the triangle  points down, but you can always flip it around afterward.

image

image

Now click the COLOR tab and color your owl

image

You can print the block AS IS

then print templates for the eyes and beak, but click the PREVIEW button first!

then go and delete the other pieces.

image

By clicking the DELETE button on the top and clicking each shape and the delete button on the keyboard you get this

image

SAVE the block too BTW

add to sketchbook and save file

To print the FPP you have to go and delete the eyes and beak.

Under the applique tab click everything and delete

image

Now when you PRINT foundation pattern it looks like this

image

You can change the numbers around but most often EQ does a pretty good job at it Smile

PRINT and have fun

image

If you’ve done this block, comment below with a link to your blog, I’d love to see it!

Wouldn’t this be a cute baby quilt?

image

Or an easier LARGER block (9”)

(You’d have to tape your Foundation papers but it’s only 4 then!)

Have fun!

  1. Great tutorial. While one could technically do eyes in paper piecing, the owl just looks so cute with those applique' eyes. Great design to incorporate paper piecing and applique'. So cute. Gosh, these would also make excellent gifts.SewCalGalwww.sewcalgal.blogspot.com
