EQ7 Tutorial Tuesday–Hexagon diamonds

beaquiltersEQ7tutorialtuesday

thru the Accuquilt qube FB group I got a new online friend Renie and long story short, I talked to her about EQ and she bought it!!

she’s working on this hexagon quilt and I wanted to show how you can quickly plan your layout in EQ and it shows yardage for your project.

Doing a hexagon layout in EQ is what SOLD her, can’t do that with the mini!

Open EQ and start a new file then start a new project

Then pick the type and size of hexagons, here it’s “H” (horizontal)

and she wants a king sized quilt so 90 x 90”

so 24 horizontal and 42 vertical, it may sound odd, but it’s because it’s more like double for the horizontal number of hexagons, it only counts the complete hexagons that touch the border, so with 24 there’s also 23 half hexagons that are offset, so really it’s 47 wide.

Renie told me the finished size of her hexagons are 1.25”

Now since I’ll be coloring a lot of lines, I picked the line brush (tools on the right side)

Then I started coloring, I start at the top left, since if I have to add or remove rows, EQ adds or removes from the right side or the bottom.

image

I quickly realized I wanted to paint the background white before getting too far, using the spraycan and holding down SHIFT and clicking twice since it colors one column at at time (every other column)

image

keep coloring with the line brush, unfortunately you can’t copy and paste, but this is sort of scrappy in a way, so just make diamonds and enjoy it Smile

now at the end to the right I ended up being just a row short

image

so I went back to the layout and adding another column (horizontal) to 25

image

and keep coloring

here’s the final quilt

image

now if you print (preview) the yardage it shows both the yardage and the #s of hexagons (patches) for each color

The white includes the skinny 1” border which I left in there

So this is a good gauge about the fabrics, but may need more if cutting out with a GO die.

anyways, Renie, hope that get’s your creativity going!! Smile
