EQ7 Tutorial Tuesday–different sampler quilt

Have you ever wanted to make or design a sampler quilt with different sized blocks?

Here’s a fun one I made a while back.

I’ve also shown a tutorial in 2012 on how to create one here

The technique is basically the same

You start with a CUSTOM SET LAYOUT quilt and set the size to whatever you want, here I picked 48×48”

image

You start by adding a bunch of blocks to the sketchbook and then pick a block and on layer 1, while holding down SHIFT, you click and drag and put in your block, I had the grid ON

image

with the adjust tool on the right bar,

select the block and at the top bar, click to change the size of the block to a nice even number, I picked 8” x 8”

image

you also want to make sure the position is 0 x 0 (the position is to the left of the size at the top bar)

image

I copied and pasted this block and moved it down to the bottom right corner (position is 40 x 40)

image

Then you can select another block from the sketchbook and instead of clicking and dragging again, you just click on this 2nd block and the new block will replace the old one!

image

This is a good way to do it so you make sure the size of the block remains 8”

Now add more blocks in different sizes, I have some that are 4”, 8”, 12” and 16”

image

Then fill it up with more blocks and move them around, just copy and past the existing blocks as the sizes are correct!

Here’s mine all filled up

Now go in and replace the blocks with other fun blocks.

It looks completely different once you pick a fabric line or color combination to color in all the blocks

Try out making a sampler, they are fun!!

  1. Custom set is something I have not done a lot with, so this will be fun to play with when things settle down a bit! Thanks for the tutorial on it.
