EQ7 Tutorial Tuesday– tumbler quilt

beaquiltersEQ7tutorialtuesday

I forgot to do the tutorial Tuesday last week, but it kind of works out as I can show my tumbler quilt in EQ7.

(Splash that was in McCall’s)

tumbler SPLASH fabrics

You start a new quilt and make it ONE PATCH

image

it may default as hexagons, but just change that in the layout tab

image

you pull down the patch style menu and change to tumbler

image

then change the width and height to what looks good, I did both of mine at 3

image

I did the sample 10 x 20

Then it’s coloring time!

You may notice that two neighboring tumblers are the same color then they are offset on the next row and so on, an easy way to color is with the straight line paint brush

image

This was my original sketch BECAUSE that was the batiks I had on hand at first- remember Smile

image

(This one had skinny tumblers and the GO cutter they are “fatter” so the finished top was a lot shorter.

Then with the NEW batiks, I tried again and followed the same pattern and now used the WANT to just replace certain colors

and I added more rows

image

here’s another version

image

and another

image

I just kept 9 colors in the quilts.

Here I’m using the wand again and holding down CTRL while clicking on the color I want to be replaced, here since it’s in rows, you have to click around 4 times, as it will only color one tumbler that’s upright and flipped in one row and the row below is flipped so you have to color those twice as well.

image

here’s another one

image

another fun way to just “get ideas” for colors is to use the random recolor tool

image

image

then you can map to fabrics

image

Now instead of calculating or counting how many of each you need, just use the print preview for fabric yardage and next to the color swatches, it shows how many times each one is used

image

Now the yardage may not be right if you’re using the tumbler GO die, just reference what the paperwork says, i.e. 1yd = how many tumblers or how many per WOF.

Have fun with the tumbler layout in EQ!

Do comment if you’ve made a tumbler quilt before and maybe link to a post that shows it

  1. I love the tumbler block it goes together so fast. I've made 3 or 4 of them.

  2. I want to make a chevron tumbler quilt. The columns would all be facing the same direction. Any idea how I would do that in EQ7?Thanks!
