EQ7 Tutorial Tuesday EQ stitch Crazy patch

This weeks tutorial is something I’ve always wanted to try with EQ Stitch!

a crazy patch block!

I always admire the crazy patch block files I see for embroidery machines, so I figured I’d try my hand at it in EQ Stitch!

I used a hoop size of 4” (or 100mm)

and drew a few random lines in an APPLIQUE block and include the perimeter!

Under the stitch tab, select SET EDGE STITCH and

select RUN stitch (you can also set this as your default) but I left the default as something else, so I could see which stitches I was working on, you’ll see why.

then click all the stitch lines and change to the run stitch

pick a random color and color the thread lines the same

Now you have to think about the ORDER of the stitching- it can help if you actually “print or preview” the FPP file and it will label the pieces in number order.

Back on artwork tab, draw lines around the middle a good bit apart from the center square

IT WAS BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION THAT THE LINES SHOULD BE RIGHT ON TOP OF THE PREVIOUS LINES TO LOOK BEST AND BE EASIER TO RIP OUT THE STABILIZER ONCE DONE- you can copy and paste the lines then 🙂

and color this a different thread color (after you change to a run stitch)

(sorry I had to make another file, so I’ll continue from this one)

Next is the TOP of this one.

Draw a line just INSIDE the stitch line from the beginning, like this, and extend it over the middle a bit too, then color it a different color and made it a run stitch like before.

Then draw lines on the top on the sides of the patch area, here I colored it purple. Notice they are again past the red stitch lines from the beginning. (They will be covered up so it doesn’t matter if they are 100% straight)

In the same way do the bottom left now, here the first line goes from the middle and all the way up and left to the edge (green)

then the 2nd step on the bottom left edge (yellow)

and the bottom right (blue)

and the edge of that (pink)

The next step is the patch on the top right (yellow)

Then also do a line around the whole block again in a different color (light green)

Export the file and sort the thread colors

My machine is a 6 needle machine so I chose to show white and black threads (normally I would have done all white)

Here’s step 1 stitched out

I then placed a fabric over the middle (it was small enough I didn’t need spray adhesive- but you may want to)

step 2 stitched it down

Then I trimmed close to the stitch line

added another piece of fabric over it, right sides together and over the middle first

stitched down the next line

then I used this hand held craft iron to fold over and iron down the seam, it just makes it more CRISP! (forgot to show that it stitched down the sides)

Here’s the next patch in the same way

and continued around

Here’s all 4 sides

then it stitched down the perimeter

I used a tear away stabilizer and then tore it off.

and trimmed so 1/4” is INSIDE the stitch line.

Here it ended up being 4 1/4” trimmed, so lesson learned that I should make the block maybe 4 1/4” or 3 3/4” so there’s wiggle room for trimming.

Then you can stitch on the sewing machine with fun decorative stitches!
