EQ7 Seasons Row a Long, filler rows

EQ Seasons RAL Button

It’s time to kick off the ROW A LONG with EQ7.

At first I was going to do a REAL row, but time got the better of me and I had to step back and instead just do filler rows, where I didn’t have to sew anything.

Thanks to Marian for organizing this!

Designing filler rows is till fun and simple and quick!

image

First the width has to be 60” wide, the height will vary and grow as you add more rows and fillers 🙂

So start with a Horizontal Strip quilt.

On every other row (for the fillers) select the strip style to be pieced blocks and make them small.

So maybe 3” wide x 60” that would then equal 20 blocks.

image

My 3rd row is the same,

the 5th row is 4” so that’s 15 blocks

and the 7th row is 2” with 20 blocks (so those are 2 x 3”)

image

Now go into the block library and choose some simple blocks, that can easily be divided by 3 or 4.

I chose Shoo fly

Diamond in a square

flying geese (3 in a row)

variable star

Hour glass

and snowball

image

on row #1 I alternated the shoo fly and snowball block, by holding down ALT and selecting the shoo fly block and clicking the first block, then the same with the snowball block and the second block.

image

Then row #3 I chose the hour glass and filled the whole row and just rotated every other block, again by selecting the rotate tool and holding down ALT and clicking one block.

image

Row #5 I used the variable star and diamond in a square blocks

image

Row #7 I used the flying geese and had every other one flipped too.

image

As you can see, I chose a very pastel muted color palette, as I was thinking SPRING colors.

(I reduced the main rows to 1/2” just to see the filler rows close together, but of course you would have BIG blocks/rows in between)

image

Here’s what it might look like in summer colors

I used Flower fields by Island Batik

image

and a fall version also using fabrics from Island Batik

image

and maybe a Christmas version

image

and a winter version

Hope this inspired you!

I LOVE playing with EQ7 and if you ever want to design your own quilts or change a quilt layout you’ve seen and either want to change the size, the blocks, the colors etc. EQ is SEW easy to use.

Inspirational tutorial. I really need to try to stitch something small, with this detail out. Would you do this via traditional piecing or paper piecing? Certainly would make spectacular filler rows between the Seasonal block rows. QuiltShopGalwww.quiltshopgal.com

  29. Doris Rice, The Quilting Queen

Great filler rows that I'm sure I'll be using on the quilt for the reveal on 10/6. Thanks for sharing and creating!

  40. Filler rows are such a great idea! I've seen row quilts before, especially with the popularity of the Row by Row Experience, but I have never really known what to do with rows. Fillers help.

  42. Tu-Na Quilts

I don't have EQ but I sure might have to look into getting it. It looks like fun. And I'm sure makes pattern writing a whole lot easier than graph paper. kthurn@bektel.com

  43. Very clear tutorial. I'm dong this blog hop to further my EQ7 education!

  44. Lisa in Port Hope

Firstly, rafflecipter is under my Facebook login. But anyway, I wanted to say that I like the winter colours the best. Not sure why, I feel like I don't want to let go of summer.

  45. Amazing how changing the colours changes the feel of the whole design to show the seasons!
