I had a recent request about adding 60 degree triangles around a panel, I’m sure what she is looking for but it’s a great idea to play with panels and border blocks!
So here’s what I came up with
In EQ8 under libraries/ Blocks there’s section 09 that’s called border blocks, under single blocks there’s a section that looks like this, the red ones are single repeats, the orange are double repeats, next is yellow and it keeps going from 1-6 and there’s another 7-12 section.
I added all triangle in a square blocks and the matching repeats to the sketchbook
Now to play with panels, the first fabric section I came to in the new 2018 fabric downloads #2 was this collection called Jolly Santa by Andover, I can tell the first fabric is a panel
So I added all these to the sketchbook, now it’s time to find out how big the panel is!
I added it to the quilt layout which has 9” blocks by default and look it tiled twice, so I’m guessing it’s 4” tiles!
here they are set to 4” – perfect!
Now Let’s try 2” sashing
When it’s 2” wide the block would be 2” x 4” so the blocks we imported would work with the 2x repeat (the orange)
Here I rotated every other one
Then color them
instead of clicking the spray can, I chose the SWAP fabrics and picked a fabric then at least it’s only 2 clicks!
here’s the result
or like this with the spray can
or this with the paint brush
Now if you want the sashing to be 1” the math would be better with the 4 triangle blocks (green)
looks like this with fabrics
Here I added 2 drop diamonds and did the sashing 4” just like the blocks
here it’s colored
and with blue in the cornerstones
It’s fun to play with border blocks, not JUST in the borders but as sashing blocks too
Hope you like it!
Great tutorial. The 60 degree diamonds in the borders can easily make panel fabric into a stunning quilt.
Thanks for reminding us to think outside the box Bea!
