Dust off an old Book Blog hop – Day 5

Today is the start of the Dust off an old book Blog hop

It’s my second year hosting this hop after it was a great success a year ago!

The idea is that all us quilters tend to hoard, I mean COLLECT quilt books and never get rid of them, so I encourage participants to find a really old quilt book, flip thru it and be inspired by it! There can be some really groovy stuff or some really ugly stuff too, just because fashion/trends have changed…. Then from that inspiration, make something with it, it can be something small or something BIG, something that just uses a block from the book or maybe just the colors or maybe do an exact copy? totally up to them!!

today is day #5

Check out what they’ve made!

Since it’s my day too, I have this cute project to show you!

First I looked thru my quilt books and found that the oldest one I have is a Danish one from 1983!

Each page shows a quilt and a bit of history and then how it’s made or a technique.

I was really drawn to this pineapple quilt!

Of course I then used my Accuquilt Pineapple die

And I did have solids in white, grey and red, so that would be a close copy of the block in the book- though the center is a square on the die and not a diamond.

I cut out enough to make 3 blocks and started sewing them together, because the center is a square, the red had to touch it, unlike the book where the white touched it.

Quick the 3 -10″ blocks were done!

Then I sewed them together like this

and added a border. Do you notice that I used 3 different greys? I didn’t have that much of either, I thought it would be nice and different.

I found a nice panto on my new QCT and quilted rows of interlocking hearts in grey thread and the binding is also grey like the border

I have this runner listed in my Etsy shop here

A fun runner to make!

I also have some sponsors for giveaways!

  1. What a nice runner. I never thought about using those blocks for a runner. I have just made a small doll quilt with pineapple blocks before. But now I’m making 63 blocks for a challenge quilt at Persimon Dreams. Have a nice weekend!

  2. Fun, Bea. Love that your historic book was partnered with the modern GO! This was a fun blog hop, thanks for setting it up!

  3. I had fun participating this year. Thank you for organizing the blog hop. I have ideas running through my head for next year.

  4. I’ve loved the pineapple block for years, but have yet to try it. Your table runner looks like a perfect project to begin. I’ve yet to try Warm and Natural batting for a large quilt, but have used it for smaller projects. My favorite block for jelly roll strips is rail fence or variations thereof.

  5. I’ve tried Warm and Natural before I loved it. It is not sold around me though. Need to go all the way to town to get some. Would love to win this. Thank you for the chance.

    1. You can buy it online on Joann’s and amazon too (use a coupon on JoAnn’s)

  6. I love these 3 quilts: Stop N Go (that is so cool!), Nighttime at the River and Starlight Star Bright.
Again , thanks for the chance.
It was fun following along all week. I saw lots of beautiful projects. ;^)

    1. Kathleen Manoff

Wow that is beautiful. I would love that pattern. The medallion .

  7. I like your color choices on your table runner. I have used Warm and Natural batting and I like it. I’ve not ever made a medallion quilt, nor have I ever had a jelly roll so can’t name a favorite. Any one of your pdf patters would be a treat. I’ve enjoyed following your Dust off an old book blog hop this week. I’m just catching up with yesterday’s posts today. Thanks for sponsoring it!

  8. I have used Warm and Natural batting and like it–I have also tried Hobbs fusible 80/20 and like that also.

  9. I have made a Jelly Roll quilt from a pattern by Fat Quarter Shop (name escapes me). They have some nice free patterns to try for Jelly Rolls.

  10. ❤️❤️❤️ The table runner! I’m almost caught up with all my ufo’s can’t wait to begin some new quilts projects! This is so fun adding it to my list 😊

  11. Crazy as it sounds …. I’ve never used the warm batting and I don’t have a favorite jelly roll pattern I usually slice and dice them for small bits of color in other patterns!

  12. I like Garden of Eden, the Nativity table runner and ….. (several others I can’t choose from)

  13. What a beautiful block and runner. I love pineapple blocks and have made many. I have used W & N batting. I have also used Jelly Rolls, but I typically don’t use them as strips. I find the 2.5″ size convenient to a lot that I make. I have made medallion quilts, too. I guess I’ve done just about everything there is to do. LOL

    1. Oh, and I like lots of your patterns, as you already know. For this hop, I’d say Garden of Eden, Bento Boxes, and Night Time at the River. Thanks for all the great chances to win prizes on the hop. You’ve done a super job of organizing!
