Dust off an old Book Blog hop – Day 1

Today is the start of the Dust off an old book Blog hop

It’s my second year hosting this hop after it was a great success a year ago!

The idea is that all us quilters tend to hoard, I mean COLLECT quilt books and never get rid of them, so I encourage participants to find a really old quilt book, flip thru it and be inspired by it! There can be some really groovy stuff or some really ugly stuff too, just because fashion/trends have changed…. Then from that inspiration, make something with it, it can be something small or something BIG, something that just uses a block from the book or maybe just the colors or maybe do an exact copy? totally up to them!!

today is day #1

This is such a fun idea! And I am learning about some fabulous designers via this Blog Hop. Thanks, Bea, for arranging.

  2. Hello! I am so glad to be participating in the blog hop. To answer your questions, I have never made a medallion quilt, although I do have some quilts with more than one border. I have used Warm and Natural batting; its my favorite. I have made one jelly roll quilt, but it isn’t quilted yet. Of the patterns you have, I like Nighttime at the River, Birds of a Feather, and Star Light Starbright.

  3. Renea Yarolim

I use mainly Warm & Natural batting for all my quilts. I use a lighter weight batting for smaller projects.
I have bought jelly rolls but I have not used them yet (I love looking at them on my shelves)
I like the Pinwheel Pop, Boxed In & Nighttime at the River quilt patterns (it was hard to pick just three patterns as I really liked most of them). Thanks for the giveaway.

  4. I have used Warm and Natural batting. I really like their all cotton batting with scrim.

  5. Hi I love medallion quilts – sort of like a round robin quilt you make yourself! I like Warm andNatural – great batting!

  6. I have not made a medallion quilt before. I use Warm & Natural all the time. I just got a new roll of it last month. My favorite pattern for using a jelly roll is one I drew up myself for a baby quilt. I’m fixing to make 2 more baby quilts using that pattern. My 3 favorite patterns are Away in a Manger, Bento boxes & Star Light Star Bright (hoping that one is paper pieced).

  7. Kathleen Scargle McCormick

This was such a fun hop last year, but timing wasn’t good this year…. I love any jelly roll pattern, but I do love Jelly roll Jam by V& Co.

  8. Kathleen Scargle McCormick

Actually V & Co blogged about it, but it is a Fat Quarter Shop Pattern…feel free to correct my comment or leave the reply. Sorry for being inaccurate.

  9. I have used the warm and natural batting and really like it. I have not yet made a jelly roll quilt – but I will someday! The patterns I like most are Patriotic stars, My crazy cat, and Train ride. Thanks!

  10. Hi Bea! What a fun blog hop. I’ve already discovered that I own that book that Wendy is featuring, and that I’ve made several of the patterns from this gem of a book. I find I like Jelly Rolls from Moda, and Me & My Sister specifically. For batting, I use 100% cotton by Warm & Natural. I have a big roll of it (queen size, I think) and use it for everything. Thanks so much for hosting such a fun hop. ~smile~ Roseanne

  11. Hi Bea
I was waiting for this hop! I love seeing what everyone makes and the oldies they use for inspiration.
I have made several medallion quilts and really enjoy them.
Warm and Natural is my favourite batting.

      1. I haven’t tried the warm and plush, is that by the warm company too?

        1. Yes and I think it is fairly new in the last few years. It is thicker than the original warm and natural and doesn’t have scrim like the original.

  12. I don’t have a favourite jelly roll pattern, but I did get a book “Layer Cake, Jelly Roll and Charm Quilts” by Pam and Nicky Lintott that I’m itching to do some of the patterns.

    1. I enjoy making several jelly roll patterns, such as the split rail fence and Emma’s quilt. My current favorite is the Irish chain using a jelly roll for the 9 patches and a lovely light batik for the background.

    1. I live warm and natural batting. I use a lot of wite fabric so their white batting g is great.

      1. I still use the regular batting for white quilts, but know what you mean…

  13. I am in love with the older quilts–I know everyone is into the so called ‘modern’ look–
but I love the old blocks and all the work they take to make–and I only hand quilt my quilts–
I am just ‘old school’ I guess!!! thanks for the chance to win some goodies too–
    have an awesome week–
    luv, di

    1. that’s ok…. antique quilts are cool too and some are still “in”….

  14. What a clever idea for a blog hop! Cant wait to see all the different items everyone comes up with!

  15. I use W & N most of the time. It is my go-to batting, although I do like wool when I can afford it!

  16. My favorite jelly roll pattern is probably the jelly roll race pattern. I like that it uses the entire roll.

  17. I have t ever made a medallion quilt. I like warm and natural for machine quilting but not for hand quilting. I am working on a Villa Rosa designs jelly roll pattern called out of line that I’m enjoying. I haven’t made many jelly roll patterns so I gues that’s my favorite.

  18. Lisa England

I have used Warm & Natural and I like it. I also like Pellon Nature’s Touch batting. I don’t have a favorite jelly roll pattern, haven’t done the same one twice that I can recall. I have a bunch of books with jelly roll patterns so I try different ones.

  19. No, I have not made a medallion quilt, although I have seen some beauties that have tempted me! I use Warm and Natural when I can find it.

  20. The last quilt I made with a jelly roll was Sugar Bloom from The Sewing Loft site. It went quickly!

  21. Lynne Stucke

I’d so love to do a stained glass medallion quilt . . . what better way to use batiks? Thank you for this chance to win.

  22. Lynne Stucke

I love Warm and Natural! Bought some at the Houston Quilt Show, and it worked perfectly. Has a great ‘hand’. I don’t have any jelly roll patterns, but I saw one on a blog post that was like a jelly roll race, only the roll pieces were separated by pinwheels. It was lovely!

  23. This is such a great idea-I have several books to pull out and look through.
I really like Warm and Natural and it’s my preferred brand.

  24. Angie in SoCal

Warm and Natural is my go-to batting. Love it, and thanks for the chance.

  25. Angie in SoCal

My favorite jelly roll pattern is a nine-patch with squares of a large print in between. Thanks for the chance.

  26. I’ve got a medallion quilt I made a few years ago but never quilted. It’s on my list for this year.

  27. I love Genesis 9:16, Rainbow nine patch, and Midnight at the River.. All great patterns!

  28. I never have made a medallion quilt though I would like to do so. I have used and like Warm and Natural batting. My first jelly roll quilt was made with Field of Flowers pattern and it’s still my favorite.

  29. Susan the Farm Quilter

Does making a star as a medallion for the backing for the third quilt I ever pieced count? I have used, and have a roll of, Warm and Natural…I like it for some things, but it is thinner then I really like when I want my quilting to show. Jelly roll…my favorite pattern for using them is the jelly roll rug!! Three patterns…Blue Lagoon – love optical illusion quilts, Star Light Star Bright, and Birds of a Feather!

  30. Sharon Vrooman

I have made a few miniature Civil War medallion quilts, but this pattern is stunning.

  31. Sharon Vrooman

I don’t have a favorite JR pattern – there are so many and it depends on the fabric line which I will use.

  32. I used warm and natural on the last quilt I made and liked it very much so will definitely be using it again. I have never made a medallion quilt and I have only made one quilt using a jelly roll although I do have a jelly roll on my fabric shelf that I will need to find a pattern for. The quilt pattern I made was a BOM I followed online and so it was more of a sampler quilt so I don’t really have a favorite jelly roll pattern yet. I like Patriotic Stars, Underwater Stars and Garden of Eden. I have lots of quilt books I have never made anything out of and the oldest quilt book I have I bought in 1974. It was before rotary cutters and in the book it said you were not making a real quilt unless you were sewing it all by hand. I started to do that and quickly realized that wasn’t for me. I was so glad that things had changed when I started quilting again a few years ago. Yes, I still have that book and don’t really know why I have kept it as it is very outdated.

  33. Monica Eggleton

I have never made a medallion quilt but I have a couple on my project list. I currently have a king sized Warm and Comfort all cotton on my shelf for the quilt top I am currently working on. It was highly recommended by the gals cutting fabric. My general go to is purchasing another all cotton by the bolt, we will see what I prefer. Kona Cotton Sunrise is on my list of jelly rolls that I want to try, but I have never purchased jelly rolls to date. The big three patterns I really like are Blue Lagoon, and two paper pieced (my favorite right now) Birds of a Feather and When Pigs Fly. I like this concept of dusting old books off the shelf. It is nice to meet new people on blog hops. Thank you for doing this hop.

  34. suzanprincess

My favorite batting is Warm and White or Warm and Natural, so would be happy to win some! A jelly roll is always useful to have on hand especially with all the children’s quilts I make to donate to Sacramento Blankets for Sacramento Kids.

  35. Stearns Carol

I always use Warm and White batting. I use a lot of white based neutrals and the white batting doesn’t turn them into yellow based. Kind of like a white drapery lining when I was a decorator for 35 years. I would love a new book, always looking for new ideas. And the jelly roll, send me one! Thanks for this blog.

  36. This is a great idea for a blog hop! I have a lot of quilting books that need dusting off, and this will inspire me. I have used Warm and Natural batting, and it’s my favorite! It’s soft and doesn’t shift when quilting. My favorite jelly roll pattern is any version of a log cabin. Thanks for the fun!

  37. I absolutely love your Nighttime at the River pattern! And I’m undecided about the other two. They are all beautiful!
