Dust off a Quilt Book Day 4- MY TURN!

It’s the last day of the DUST OFF A QUILT BOOK blog hop!

First have a look at

NettieSews

And then it’s also my turn 🙂

I actually made 2 things, this first one was a quick one because I wasn’t sure if I’d get to finish the second one after all the stuff with my husband….

The book I chose is called “Spotlight on Neutrals” and it’s TOTALLY out of my wheelhouse, because I love COLORFUL quilts and often don’t include enough neutrals…. so this was a good challenge!

I found this one quilt made from disappearing nine patch blocks and I actually had a ton of 2 1/2″ squares already cut in a bin, so I figured I’d use those and see how far I’d get!

I made the 9 patches and used the beige as the X parts of the blocks and then white and grey as the O part of the blocks

I had enough to make 12 blocks

Then I cut them up

I realized that I should have used more variety, otherwise the beige would be most of the center of the blocks according to the book, so then I started experimenting!

I liked this look better and sewed the blocks together like that

Instead of making a small quilt 3×4 blocks, I decided on a table runner 2×6 blocks instead and shuffled the blocks around.

I quilted it with a sort of modern design in white thread

It measures 11″ x 33″

I said I made another quilt and this was really my main idea for this blog hop

I’ve had this STASH LAB book for a while and I don’t think I ever made anything from it, probably not the neutral book either, isn’t that how it often is??

On the cover on the left is a string quilt with skinny string strips and then solid grey, so it makes it very modern!

I decided to use selvedge edges instead and had several sections started

The quilt is called loose change BTW 🙂

So I made several chunky sections and already planned a 4×5 layout with 8 1/2″ blocks so as long as the selvedge height was 8 1/2″ I was good to go!

After making a bunch, I though I had enough and then did some math and found that I really needed to sub cut the sections rather skinny, 1 1/2″ and 1″ sections, 20 of each

I also cut out this dotted grey fabric and added different widths to make them 8 1/2″ when sewn together- I should have looked at the book and seen that the blocks were different, or every other block was, oh well….. I did my own thing AGAIN 🙂

Fun blocks though!!

Then I laid them out and turned every other block sideways, I decided to have all the blocks facing either right side up or to the left, so not much randomness in that. But that’s ok 🙂

I sewed the blocks together and added a white inner border and the same grey as an outer border

I quilted it in a boxy design in grey thread

The quilt measures 38″ x 46″

This was a fun challenge!
