It’s day 4 of the “Dust off an old quilt book” Blog hop
Have you had fun so far hopping around to see inspiration from old quilt books?
I’ve been working on my quilt for months! I had to look back and remember which book I got inspired by and this was it, “Bits and pieces”
Â
Here is a small quilt made with shoofly blocks!
If you follow me here or on IG, you might have seen my blocks in progress
I used my 4″ QUBE set at first to make a bunch of tiny shoofly blocks, these end up being 3 1/2″!
 Â
after I had a big pile done I started thinking about a plan!
I could add a sashing to them or…
combine with bigger shoofly blocks? I really like this plan, I’d use the 8in qube to cut those! and they would make 6″ blocks fin. so 4 of the tiny blocks together would also equal 6″ Fin….
I kind of reverse engineered it a bit, I figured out how much of this yellow Bee fabric I had and how much of the blue for borders
I guess the shoo-fly blocks are not shoo-flies, but shoo-bees or maybe Boo-Bees???? LOL say that out loud!!
I made a test block and with 4 small small blocks together with a big one, it looks really cute!
I then set to work and cut out enough yellow and dark blues as I needed for all the blocks- once I had a plan with a number 🙂
I finished the quilt and quilted it and added the same Bee fabric for binding! The quilt measures 38″ x 51″
It really think it’s fun to look at!
I even used some SPAM yellow fabric from Michael Miller, but probably most of the fabrics are from Connecting threads, the bee fabric was from hobby lobby- I don’t prefer their fabrics but I thought the bees were cute, so I got it 🙂 There’s also some batiks from Island Batik!
I used the leftover blue fabric and some yellow for the backing, here you can see the quilting better too, I believe it is called Clamshell.
So the end result looks NOTHING like in the book, but that’s ok, I changed the colors and the layout and I think the block size too and of course the finished quilt size too! But that’s what I like about quilt books, they are great inspiration! sometimes I follow the books exactly, sometimes it’s just for ideas!

Beautiful quilt! The colors are perfect right now for supporting Ukraine too. I love blue and yellow any time, but right now, these color seem especially appropriate. Great work adapting that pattern to suit your needs! Oh, and I love the quilting too!
Well done! I love how you adjust the pattern to your inspiration, mixing small and large blocks is a beautiful idea! Cute bee fabric 😉
Thank you for the challenge, I love it!
It’s a beautiful quilt…thanks for sharing!
Bee-utiful. Blue and yellow is always a very happy and cheerful combo.
It’s a beautiful quilt and I love all those fabrics. Blue and yellow is such a classic combination and just makes me smile. Thank you for hosting the hop. I really love the challenge every year.
That turned out great!
I think what I like about this Dust off a book hop is that we can change a pattern any way we want. That creates something totally our own. This quilt is really amazing. I see a diagonal sashing created by the small shoofly blocks and it really moves me around the quilt.
Hi Bea, what a lovely quilt. I love the colours and the two sizes of blocks. Thanks so much for hosting this great party. It really took me forever to figure out what I wanted to make but I’m glad that I participated. I even have another project that is all cut and ready to sew based on another book – so eventually my sewing machine will have a cover. Take care!
Beautiful work!
