Dust off a book blog hop

Hey everyone, today is a ONE day blog hop for my yearly DUST OFF A QUILT BOOK blog hop, we only had 4 people sign up including me, so it seemed silly to spread it out over a week.

For some reason, time completely got away from me, but I DID manage to finish the quilt in time!

The book I dusted off was “Kaleidoscope quilting the smart way” by Sharon Sebrow,

I don’t remember when I bought the book but remember I had to call a quilt store in NY to get the book and the template and a woman named Sharon picked up the phone and it was HER! I was so tickled and we started chatting and she signed my template when I placed my order 🙂

My favorite quilt in the book is called Classic Blue and White and I’ve made this one a few times with the template

There’s a page with color suggestions too.

Looking at the book, I was wondering if I could use a QUBE set?

And I started playing with colors in EQ and came up with a few ideas.

First I found out that I could add an inner border and make partial blocks

It looked fun in pinks too and I thought I’d go with this plan

But then I looked at my pink fabrics and white and actually I washed some extra solid white and didn’t realize that Solveig had put a rather new RED bedsheet in the wash- or rather I put my fabrics IN with her load, so the solid white came out with a tint of pink to it, so I went back to EQ and figured I’d use a LOT of white instead and swapped some fabrics around.

Here’s my fabric choices

The “tricky” part with this design was this kaleidoscope block where the kite shape had a triangle at the end, but I thought of an idea and tested it on scraps and it sort of worked- hard to tell on a small piece, I just had to TRY it and see what happened

The idea was to cut out the full kite shape with the QUBE set but then also cut out a #5 triangle and them trim part of the kite shape and sew the pieces together, it wasn’t a PERFECT fit, but I continued on and quickly learned it’s better to rotary cut that piece off, rather than use scissors and “wing it”

Here’s all the cut pieces, cut with the 6″ QUBE and companion set

This is what a traditional kite block would look like and a block with the triangle in the corner, again the true test is when all the blocks are sewn together into the quilt top

Here’s all the blocks and the half / quarter blocks, notice I used the triangle in a square side pieces for those side blocks!

And with a white inner border and the pink leaves as the outer border, the top looks pretty good, there’s a few oopsies but that’s ok

And here’s the finished quilt, it measures 34″ x 46″

I quilted a heart design in light pink thread all over it.

It’s not perfect, but I still think it’s cute, and it was a fun experiment!

Here’s the other 3 participants in the blog hop, please hop over and check them out!

  1. Your quilt is beautiful, I love the soft colors. Great book, and bravo for the signed copy!
Thank you for hosting this fun challenge, I love it!

  2. I love your colorway choice for this one! Hopefully I will join you again some time for Dust off an Old Book. I’m charged with custody of two grandchildren now whilst still working 60+ hours a week at my construction job. 🙁 And living “on the road” at the same time. Sewing time is very fleeting right now between chores, cooking and essentials shopping on my Sundays off. I do miss the quiet time my machine provides me to think….

  3. I always like this blog hop and I always intend to sign up! So I hope you will continue even though you didn’t get tons of responses this year. I like seeing what old books are out there, that I somehow don’t have yet. 🙂

  4. That is beautiful! Love the fabric choices – I think I have that peach fabric or at least something very similar. I love that you updated the blocks to make them easier to cut using your cutter.

  5. Your version of the quilt from the book is beautiful!
I’m sorry I couldn’t participate in the blog hop this year. I had such a good time with it in 2023.
