Hi everyone, I am excited to be part of this book blog hop called Christmas RAPPing
(Reverse Applique and Paper Piecing) by Margaret Brewster Willingham and fellow Island Batik ambassador Nan Baker!
First I got a digital copy of the book and had to pick a project to make and it was really hard but I picked one called “Mexican Christmas” which is a wall hanging, but I had another idea!
And of course Island Batik donated fabrics for us to use for our projects and free reign over which fabric line to use, so as I was looking at the fabrics, maybe because I’ve worked with their brights so much recently, for some reason I really liked Quiet shades and thought of a baby quilt (Baby girl)!
I forgot to take a picture of the fabrics before I cut into them but here’s after I cut everything but before sewing anything together.
I printed everything and started sewing!
First I made the center block.
I also did the corner blocks and then I did the reverse applique blocks, I’ve never done reverse applique, but once I read the instructions, it was easy enough to figure out.
The large diagonal star points are reverse applique, the smaller ones and the center are regular applique.
I then added the setting triangles
After looking at it, I decided to add a skinny border as it would still be smaller than a WOF.
and then I quilted it in light purple and added purple binding.
Of course the batting is Hobbs which was given to island batik ambassadors, this one was the 80/20 batting.
Recently I got a new back splash for my design wall and the lights I also got recently, so I put it up for the first time and added the quilt- tape didn’t work, so I ended up pinning thru the tarp, it’s actually a light weight tarp so it would be fine to pin thru.
Here Swiffer is checking it out
and I turned on the umbrella studio lights and apart from the photo being slightly crooked I think it looks great!
(I didn’t bother ironing the tarp but probably will for next time and smooth it out more)
it’s hard to tell but I stitched flames on the outer border, ruler work straight lines on the FPP blocks and then a dense meandering on the star blocks.
I think this one was just with the top lights on in my room.
After I put all the lights and tarp away I realized I forgot to take a picture of the back of the quilt, so here’s a few on the floor 🙂
A Cute little quilt and I learned a new technique!
Thanks for Nan and Margaret for hosting and congratulations on the book!!
Looks beautiful Bea! Using the soft pastel batiks was perfect.
Your quilt is really awesome Bea! The fabrics are gorgeous. And you did a wonderful job with the design. I have heard of reverse applique, but I have never tried it before. It always seemed harder to do than regular applique.Which one do you prefer?
That turned out great Bea:) My project involves that PP star.
I'm in love with your color pallet, it looks great.
Truly lovely, Bea! You chose wonderful colours from Island Batick fabrics!
Turned out wonderfully…love the fabric
This is so nice, Bea. I love that batiks can be bright and bold, but also muted and calming. With the Island Batiks there is so much range of color and value.
Your quilt is so pretty in the beautiful colors you used.
I really like your color choices–restful and calming. It's a beautiful quilt.
