Christmas in July Blog hop

Christmas in July 350

When Carol announced this blog hop I knew I wanted to jump on it and make something! I quickly ordered fabrics from connecting threads, first a FQ bundle and then some charm squares, I had NO plan yet, but at least something Christmasy was on the way Smile

Then after I found Molly and Mine website, her crazy quilt designs are JUST gorgeous!! I waited for a 4th of July sale and ordered her big set of Christmas crazy patch set!

I wasn’t sure how I would put the quilt together, but the plan was to make all 20 blocks! I had ordered the 5” set since my 5×7 hoop is a popular size and I have stabilizer for it and I was thinking that it would not use up THAT much thread (vs the 8” size!)

Here’s block #1 started.

this was a sort of new technique to me, usually I’ve done the flip and stitch way, but this one just stitched down patched and I trimmed close to the stitch line and then continued with the design.

It turned out SO cute!! I was hooked!

Most of the designs had over 20 thread changed! and even with a big machine like mine that uses 6 spools at a time and speed at 7-800sps, each block took roughly 45-60 min!!

I was working on these blocks between projects, but then this weekend I had only about half the blocks done, so I got into panic mode and did the rest over a few days, running it non-stop Saturday!

-whenever I have deadlines I’m usually very early and with this one I was not!!

well I DID finish in time and the blocks are adorable and so WORTH it!!

I then played in EQ8 and came up with some ideas

Hubby liked the dark green border

emb christmas3

don’t like the white and green

emb christmas1

but loved this red and green version, my idea being scrappy with leftovers from the FQs!

emb christmas2

since the blocks were 5” that’s 4 1/2” when sewn together, then if I added a 1 1/2” finished sashing, I could then use my 6” QUBE set and cut out the pieces for the borders quickly!

and here’s the result!

I then quilted it and finished it Monday (3 days early!!)

It measures 32” x 38”

I quilted curves on the borders and a little loopy design, then a ribbon design on the sashing and I left the blocks alone, it makes them a bit puppy but not bad at all, I like it!

Here’s a close up of the blocks!

I love all the details of them!!

And to have a set that didn’t have SANTA in it!! (she does have a santa version too, we just don’t do Santa in our house….anyways)

( this also made me look into digitizing software- well at least add to my wish list!)

I ran out of the light green thread on the last 4 blocks, but I don’t think it’s noticeable

I’m very happy with how this quilt turned out!!

I had quite a bit of the FQs leftover, so I used my 5” square die from the 9” QUBE set and cut out a bunch, there’s 2 piles of 35 each (If I counted right) and I’m giving them away!! (2 sets, so 2 winners!!-if I can do that in rafflecopter!?)

  1. I made a crazy quilt several years ago and I love it. I have many of Molly’s patterns too. I love creating gifts for family and friends especially unique and useful gifts

  2. Beautiful quilt and lots of hard work that is well worth it. Now that I'm a widow and my two child are scattered, I have some new friends who are like sisters. We check on each other and make sure that we are all OK. We spend Christmas and holidays together and we are each others family when we cannot be with blood family. It's wonderful to have such wonderful friends that understand that it's important to have people in your life. Merry Christmas in July BTW – I would you the charm squares in quilts of The Village that I want to make for friends.

Great Christmas is the anticipation of seeing my sons. I miss them dearly throughout the year so every Christmas is a great one. The best.

  4. Marjorie's Busy Corner

Wonderful work, Bea…I look forward every year for my sons and their families to spen Christmas with us.

  5. Elizabeth Coughlin

Gorgeous quilt! Looks like a lot of work, but you did a fantastic job!

  6. That's a beautiful quilt, Bea. I love machine embroidery. I haven't used any from this designer yet, but have purchased a few through Hoop Sisters. Christmas memories – A memorable one was in the early 1990's when we had a brown christmas – no snow – we had our first snowfall that year on Jan 1. The kids said it didn't feel like Christmas. lol.

  7. Jan @Cocoa Quilts

The excitement and magic of running downstairs on christmas morning as a kid. Beautiful quilts!

  8. When I was a child we had our annual Christmas concert at the church on Christmas Eve. When Santa came down the aisle at the end of the evening I was tickled pink. Each year we got a wee brown bag of hard candies with a candy cane and a tangerine. It was sooooo special to have those treats. Makes me wonder when and how candies became a part of daily lives for so many. Janice.snell@gmail.com

  9. Those blocks are gorgeous and amazing, Bea! I used to do machine embroidery years ago and this entices me to start doing it again. This quilt will be an heirloom to treasure for years to come! Thank you so much for sharing this today and for joining me in the hop. You never cease to inspire me with all your creations. :O)

  10. I love crazy quilting and the designs in your quilt are wonderful. Beautiful quilt – what a super feeling to have it completed beforehand. As a child, we always had the church service on Christmas Eve. We were so excited to have parts to share with everyone but we could hardly contain our excitement because we knew there would be presents under the tree when we came home.

  11. Beautiful work. Love the outcome. Glad you gave up your weekend for us. I know for one I'm glad you did.

  12. Barb Neiwert

That was a great idea to use the crazy patches as the background for your embroidery. Fun, fun! And the result is awesome. Truly a keepsake piece that you've created.

  13. Very cute, I love it! I’m a crazy quilter and you’ve given me some ideas! Thanks for sharing!

Your Christmas quilt turned out great – actually an heirloom. Give yourself an A+. rozz01(at)cox(dot)net

  15. Love your quilt! I don't have an embroidery machine so it's neat to see what all one can do with it. One of my favorite childhood Christmas memories is waking up Christmas morning to the sound of sleigh bells jingling at my grandparents' house. All of us youngsters were convinced that Santa had just arrived when we heard those bells that were actually Grandpa's string, but we were none the wiser until we were older. 🙂 Thanks for sharing.

thanks for being a part of the blog hop. your quilt is fabulous. how fun it must have been to do all the embroidery. thanks for encouraging.quilting dash lady at comcast dot net

  17. That is beautiful, and looks like fun to make! As a child, Christmas was magical. I loved watching my grands grow up and being able to help with a little of that magic. Christmas is still my favorite time of the year. I always say it's my favorite season! LOL I grew up poor, but my mom always tried to get a couple of things we wanted. We just didn't know at the time how hard it was.

  18. I love crazy quilts, but your right about the time it takes to stitch them out. This one is really cool though. I just might have to purchase some new software. LOL…to go on the shelf with the others I haven't stitched yet. Perfect for the season. Wouldn't those individual blocks make fun Christmas cards too!!!!!

  19. We always had fun decorating the tree. We would make popcorn garland, hang (throw) tinsel on the tree, hang the bubble lights on the tree and wait for them to warm up and bubble. Sleeping next to the tree at night so we could look at all the sparkles while we drifted off to sleep.

  20. I remember one Christmas I received a cowboy hat and play pistol with a holster and I got a red handkerchief and I was the best cowboy for months! It was fabulous. I always got to be the bad guy to my brother the hero, but hey, I got to play with my older brother which was cool.

I love your Christmas Quilt. Total #CreativeGooodness. I'm off to check out their ME designs. I want to make this. Thanks for sharing & inspiring

Hi Bea! What a fabulous project! I have a smaller version of your embroidery machine and can say I never thought to make something like this. I will have to explore the link you shared further. This is just SO very fun, and I love all the fabrics you used. I have to agree with DH on your selection of the border! Happy Thursday! ~smile~ Roseanne

  23. Sharon Aurora

Your crazy quilt blocks are so cute! I love it. Now you've given me some great ideas.

  24. Brenda @ Songbird Designs

Beautiful quilt, Bea! Your fabrics are great! We've never done Santa in our house either. My child was not harmed!! To each his own. If you love embroidery, you will definitely love digitizing. I have three different softwares, but one I love the best. Just ask if you are interested! I've been digitizing since 2007!

  25. My best Christmas was when I was about 11 years old receiving my first bike which was a total surprise

  26. Your quilt is beautiful! My favorite Christmas memory was when I was a child and received a big bike.

  27. Best part of Christmas for me is baking dozens I mean dozens of cookies with my daughter and grandsons.

  28. I love your quilt! It's beautiful! One of my best Christmas memories is the year my dad played santa for all the grandkids. It was so sweet.

  29. Your crazy quilt turned out wonderfully. The embroidery bits just make it sing. THX for a chance at your charm pack giveaways. I used my CT charms to make a big Patience Corner for my bed for the holiday.

  30. BarefootThunder

one of my happiest Christmas moments was when my darling hubs gave me a featherweight !! I had casually mentioned that I thought they were nifty looking machines. I couldn't believe he remembered that, and actually found me one!!!

  31. Joy from Days Filled With Joy

That is so pretty! And great that you did it all in the hoop! One day when I get my embroidery module going I'll have to give it a go! Thanks for sharing! xx

  32. Robin (RsIslandCrafts)

I haven't made a crazy quilt yet but I like the idea of being able to do one in the hoop. Yours looks amazing without being over the top Christmasy.

  33. Susan-Sharon Passmore

What fun! Your quilt is fantastic! I love the idea of a crazy quilt, but I don't have the embroidery machine to help me realize one. And I"m way to lazy to do it all by hand, so it might not happen any time soon.
